My boyfriend and I will be going to Thailand for a couple of weeks. I'm the one in charge of the plans and need some help!

We want to spend about 4 nights in a nice hotel in Bangkok, know of good places to shopping for quality clothing (that's for me) and romantic places for dinner and drinks.

The rest of the time we would like to stay at a nice beach resort? Any ideas???

Thanks

Price range would be helpfull........

A hotel along the river might satisfy the romantic requirement, but this will be pricey!

Bangkok is loaded with places to shop, and with the skytrain we can make it to most places rather quickly in comparrison to the old days.

The Beach...... well stay away from Pattaya, try Koh Chang. Still relatively unexplored.

Another idea go up to Kanchantaburi and spend a few nights on a raft hotel, cheap, romantic and they have drinks. :o

We plan to go next year around Valentine's Day.

Regarding a hotel in Bangkok we are prepared to pay up to $150 a night for a nice room. I would like to know of some names of hotels that are recommended by residents/tourists.

For shopping, I have heard from some people that there are some amazing shopping malls/department stores in Bangkok. Which ones do you recommend?

For beach resorts, I have read about Krabi and surrounding areas. Any recommendations?

Thank you!

I hear the Honey Hotel on Sukumwit So 19 has a certain charm to it. Although I have yet to go the prices seem reasonable - around 1400 baht a night.

Hi, try the Imperial Queen's Park Hotel in Bangok. It's next to a park, and adjacent to the Imporium mall for shopping, and close to the skytrain for transportation.

Book the Peninsula Hotel on the river.

It's actually across the river and looks back toward the city. Best views in town.

They have shuttle boats that take you to the Skytrain.

If you go to Phuket. I'd stay at the south end of Karon Beach at Marina Cottages.

I would echo the suggestion to stay by the river -- it's not only more romantic, but also more relaxing and cooler. But I recommend either the Royal Orchid Sheraton or the Shangri-La, which are both on the "right" side of the river, and should be within your budget.

They both have riverside terraces and restaurants, and I would especially recommend the Sala Thip Thai restaurant at the Shangri-La. You can sit outside in the evening at a table for two right next to the river, and they will prepare the food without spicing it if that would be your choice. Also, the Sheraton has a quite good Thai dancing show in its outside restaurant by the river most evenings.

You can use river transportation (long tailed boats, an interesting experience) to get to Wat Arun and the Royal Palace complex, far better than braving the streets.

They are also convenient to the largest Thai antique mall in Bangkok -- River City -- if that might be on your list of things to explore.

Regarding shopping for quality clothes, in my wife's humble opinion the most convenient places are Emporium, Central Chidlom, and Siam Paragon. These are all large malls concentrated in the same part of the city, and all within 4-5 stops on the skytrain. If you really want to go upscale, there is Gaysorn Plaza, also along the same stretch of road -- although be advised that their prices are generally somewhat above those of the US.

I can't really help you with beaches, since it's been several years since we visited most of them, and they have probably changed. We live in Hua Hin, which itself is a nice beach town on the gulf not too far from Bangkok, but the beaches in the south (IMHO) are superior to Hua Hin.

There is a romantic hotel just on sukhumvit soi 4. The entrance is at the second or third floor of Nana entertainment plaza. Charge is by the hour rather than by night though, so if you are staying long then it can get expensive.

My personal preference in Bangkok is the Marriott Royal Garden Riverside, across the river from the city but easily reachable by its own boat shuttle to the skytrain, where you can reach Paragon shopping complex without having to change lines. I haven't stayed in Krabi for years so can't personally recommend anything there.
