Tap water services to parts of Bangkok to be suspended

BANGKOK, 21 March 2016 (NNT) – The Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA) has announced the suspension of tap water services to three areas of Bangkok while residents are urged to reserve water for use.

The MWA is currently in the process of installing an extra water tank at Petchkasem Pumping Station in a bid to raise the facility’s distribution capacity during the dry season. Therefore, due to the procedure, water supply to Phasi Charoen district, Taksin and Suk Sawat Roads as well as parts of Bangkok Noi district will be suspended from 9 pm of March 22 to 12 pm of March 23.

In preparation for the suspension, people living in the affected areas are advised to store water for use during the period so as to be able to carry on with their daily life. In the meantime, the MWA will be sending out water trucks to offer water supplies to residents in need.

Only recently we were hearing that there will be no shortage of water in Bangkok now there is. Can these people get their act together and make definitive statements instead of pulling ideas out of the air

The way I read it has nothing to do with a current shortage. They are having to suspend the supply whilst they do something to enable more supply in the future. Sounds positive to me - short term pain for a longer gain.

You could argue about the length of the cut but that is another story.......

If there wasnt a shortage as they stated it wouldnt matter about conserving for the future as there would be no shortage to start with. Catch 22

Excellent idea. California golf courses routinely go brown in water emergencies such as this. Except don't forget that these are the playgrounds of the Bangkok elite. Probably tap water will be cut before that.

I just wait for the announcement that, due to the suffering of water shortage, it has been decided to extend the Songkran holidays from three to, say seven days coffee1.gif

That's a great idea! There's always plenty of water in the air. Pull it out of there.

"The MWA is currently in the process of installing an extra water tank at Petchkasem Pumping Station in a bid to raise the facility’s distribution capacity..."

I think they've got their act together, it's you who hasn't.

This temporary suspension of the facility in 3 very specific areas is not due to there being no supply. Try reading the article again and you'll also see that ideas are certainly not "being pulled out of the air"..

Of course there's a shortage, the country is in the middle of a dry season drought but that isn't the point of the OP. There is currently enough water, low stocks of water are not contributing to the temporary cut-off and the need to install more equipment. Catch 22 doesn't come into it.

There are a lot of things they could do but that takes effort

Seems quite simple to me, going by this article. Its an infrastructure upgrade, and probably necessary. Outages like this happen all around the world due to maintenance and upgrades. Astonishing that some see a conspiracy here.

I would doubt if it is due to an upgrade but it would e good if it was

This drought thing is getting serious now. Better wash the car before it is too late.

If it was because of a shortage they would hardly be giving a heads-up and telling people to stock up on water before the outage.

I think you will find that golf courses in Thailand have their own retention ponds for water storage. At least all the 20 or so I have played. Have you ever been on a golf course in Thailand?

The owners here do an amazing job of taking innocuous news stories and putting a twist to them to cause massive amounts of posts and controversy.

"Astonishing that some see a conspiracy here."

Unfortunately that's what most Thaivisa members do, they attempt to ridicule everything that Thais and Thailand does but all they actually do is ridicule themselves.

I sympathise with your semi-literacy...

"The MWA is currently in the process of installing an extra water tank at Petchkasem Pumping Station in a bid to raise the facility’s distribution capacity during the dry season."

What this means, surprisingly, is that the MWA is currently in the process of installing an extra water tank at Petchkasem Pumping Station in a bid to raise the facility’s distribution capacity during the dry season! So much for your doubts.

Billions? Do you know what a billion is?

I would have thought that when making a post like yours you could have at least attached a current photo of one of these golf courses being watered wastefully.

Well why don't we deal with the facts instead of pictures

http://www.unesco.org/water/news/newsletter/155.shtml

"Golf tourism has an enormous impact on water withdrawals – an eighteen-hole golf course can consume more than 2.3 million litres a day" A DAY!!!!

x by 365 x by how many golf courses there are in Thailand a billion gallons a year is conservative probably

"An average golf course in a tropical country such as Thailand needs 1500 kg of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides per year and uses as much water as 60,000 rural villagers" all in retention ponds cites another poster!!

Wow all those pesticides as well, you golfers not doing the rest of us much favors with that either

Oh, by the way 250 golf courses in Thailand

Ok, let's go with facts but let's make them relevant, eh?

Regarding the question that you side-stepped, which golf course that you have evidence of is currently using water from the dwindling public supply to irrigate with? How much is that course actually using? If you don't know which courses are using water, and in what quantities, your guesses at consumption are meaningless.

Just because a golf course could consume 2.3m litres per day doesn't mean that any or all of them are doing that, does it? Unless you're an alarmist, of course.

You may also like to have a think about whether every golf course in Thailand waters it's greens to saturation 365 days of the year. Here's the answer, they don't.

The UNESCO figures that you quote comparing golf courses potential consumption to that of rural villagers is also meaningless unless the water consumption of those individual villagers is referenced.

"your guesses at consumption are meaningless"

There not my guesses at consumption, they are UNESCO, and they actually mention Thai courses in particular. I have no reason to doubt them, and seen nothing from you to suggest otherwise

They say, if you read it again "an eighteen-hole golf course can consume MORE than 2.3 million litres a day" it does not say a month, week or every other day, its a day

More, so it would seem they are being cautious

There are web site after web site with facts about golf course water usage and its impact on the environment not just in Thailand but around the world, I have seen no facts to say "we don't use that amount for an 18 hole course"

Simple question:

How would stopping golf courses in the Bangkok and Eastern Seaboard area from using water in rention ponds (filled by rain water) for irrigation help with the drought in the northern and northeastern provinces?
