Jonathan Fairfield
South Pattaya residents in lucky escape as power lines are downed Thaivisa Reporters PATTAYA:-- People had a lucky escape when workers demolishing an old building in South Pattaya accidentally knocked down three electricity power poles, reports Thaivisa News. The poles went toppling in the area of a shop but fortunately no one was injured in the accident on Thursday. Electrical engineers, police and other concerned agencies dashed to the soi alongside the Marine Hotel in South Pattaya around midday yesterday where an old building on about one rai of land was being knocked down by workers. However, the workmen were oblivious to the damage they were causing though a man who alerted the authorities, Chalermphon Sakribot, 41, had the presence of mind after hearing a loud noise and what he thought was an explosion to start videoing with his phone. Engineers turned off the power as police started an investigation into the incident. -- 2016-03-

Geoffggi
It appears a little too much preparation was used thankfully no one was seriously hurt, many of these electricity poles need to come down as they are dangerous in themselves, apart from being an eyesore very few of them are correctly secured into the ground. Benmart
Glad no one was killed. I was watching two workmen standing on what was one of the balconies of this structure, jackhammering the concrete to the rebar. Had the remains of the balcony collapsed, they would have most certainly been killed. That entire area had been undergoing demolition, with workers wearing the usual flip-flops, no safety equipment (helmet, steel toed boots), kids running around, flimsy barricades to protect passersby, etc. Two days ago, at Second Road and the flyover going towards Jomtien, they are replacing the concrete power pole that fell over weeks ago. Dad had his 6-7 year old in his lap as he operated the backhoe. I was going to take a photo, but the the point. Clueless until something happens. TonyHanscomb
I thought the authorities were getting rid of the overhead power system and were going to install the safer, reliable and not ugly underground power supply system? what went wrong? Does England have poles? Yes the big cross country grid system is visible in many areas but even that "HT" cabling is underground. and there are still a few power supply cables in remote places in the country side, Of course in all cities you wont see a power system exposed as that would not make sense. Brer Fox
And this is an example of the high quality Thai workforce that will be building the rail line for the high speed train. God help all those who ride on it - if it ever eventuates which it probably won't.
gandalf12
Good to see such professionals at work. The guys doing the job worked at 7-11 before attempting this mess? Still Thai's know how to do everything so I guess this must be the correct way to take down a building

Does England have poles? In major cities in England all power cables and telephone cables are underground. But in Thailand Thais cannot even fit water service pipes correctly underground ( one reason I would never drink water from a tap here ) Water pipes are often run in the sewers so the risk of cross-contamination is very high. Thais are too lazy to do things correctly
