CORONATION Street butcher Fred Elliott's dream of landing a Thai bride is doomed to end in tears as our exclusive picture reveals.

Fred is happy to pay £1,000 for Orchid Pattaya to jet in from the Far East to tie the knot with him.

What he doesn't know is that Orchid is more a flower of Salford, and he's been fleeced.

Our picture of filming for the Street's new Thai bride storyline shows the truth about Orchid (Casey-Lee Jolleys) - she sells lingerie on a backstreet market in Manchester.

A Corrie source said guardedly: "We always said things won't go smoothly for poor Fred. I guess the market scenes will have people wondering just what is going on."

Actress Casey-Lee was filming at Manchester's Longsight market with Duncan Preston, who plays Mike Baldwin's dodgy mate Dennis Stokes. He has a Thai wife in the soap and convinces lonely bachelor Fred (John Savident) that a Far East girl 40 years his junior would suit him too.

The Street source said: "Dennis tells Fred that all he did was advertise on the internet for an Oriental 'friend' from Thailand, and he had dozens of beautiful girls fighting each other to meet him.

"This is music to Fred's ears and he gives Dennis an old picture to post on the net for him.

"Dennis reassures Fred that Thai girls go for personalities, not looks, and they just want warm-hearted, generous men.

"He tells Fred if he gives him £1,000 for a return air ticket to send to Orchid, she could be in England in days."

A meeting is arranged for Manchester airport - presumably Orchid doesn't have to travel far - and lots of "twists and turns" follow.

Viewers will see Orchid appear coy and shy, disguising her market stall Salford tones with a fake foreign accent.

The Mirror's source added: "Fred is gobsmacked by her beauty.

"As he beams with happiness, he tells her: 'I'm Fred Elliott. But call me Fred, and I'm overwhelmed by you, Orchid. I say overwhelmed'."

Don't tell me you've that kind of "order a sweet bride from Thailand catalogus" in UK. That also exists in other countries in Europe.

And guess who's behind this kind of business? Thai women with their european husbands. Years ago they had books with pictures but nowadays they have videofilms and for a couple of thousand euro a man goes there and gets to try a couple of women until het finds the one who suits him.

How I know this ? I saw it on tV. What I think about it? Disgusting. But I don't know who fools who and if we should pity them. I guess some people just get what they deserve.

I don't know... reading this made me feel a bit uncomfortable...

I've had enough grief from some ignorant westerners for being a Thai woman... I'm sick of being seen as a prostitute/mail order bride/submissisve female/sex slave etc etc all the bloody time!! Aghhh!!!! I hate it when some people become all patronising towards me when they learn that I am a Thai, in good education and that I speak English; as if they can't believe such person would exist in Thai society.

These ignorant b*ggers always asked me about the bar scene and prostitution. Some even ask for details as if I'd worked in loads of brothels before or something. These days, I don't take the nice and polite role anymore and just tell them to p*** off straight back to whatever slimy hole they come from! I just hope that programmes like this don't bring these sort of people out to pester me again.

Sorry for being a bit aggressive in this post.. just a bit annoyed that this is the only way Thai women seem to be portrayed in western media. But hey, I don't know who's to blam either (or even whether there is anyone to blame)!

Well D80, I think you have every right to be pissed off.

That sort of negative stereotype also fuels the small minds that assume that all western men who holiday or live in Thailand are dirty old perverts.

The reality is - in my veiw anyway - that England has more to be ashamed of than Thailand ever will.

We are a nation of small minded, agressive, insecure, celebrity and fashion obsessed thugs and snobs...

Not so rare - by far the greater portion of the female population of Thailand are not, have not been and never will be involved in the sex trade, in it's many differing aspects.

But try and convince second-rate journalists and third-rate screen writers (hacks, the lot of them) of this simple fact.

Come on..the military and their families along with a chinese merchant class have run this country for their own benefit for years..and arguably still do. The 'educated' class of women to which you refer above as 'not so rare' are primarily the daughters of the above. The girl in a village from Mae Ai or Changwat Khon Kaen will get nine years of schooling now on average if she's lucky.

No matter how hard TRT party spins this in the opposite direction, it's the landed privileged class that calls the shots here. (for those unaware, there was and maybe still is a class system of level one to level six in Thai society, lower number being the higher class and those with bigger land allocations via military connections, among others). Anyone interested in buying a leaked university entrance exam? Well you didn't really think they were all naturally smart just cause they were rich and connected did ya??

You are right about one thing, Up2U, the REAL stories don't get covered here, and the class system paints all girls from poor backgrounds as loose and do-anything-for money.

I know there are people who are not as lucky as me. However, I don't get to where I am just because of family connection or how much money my parents made.

I would not have been able to afford studying abroad or just choose to go into higher education as much as I want had I not work hard to get sponsorship & scholarship from various organisations/universities. I don't think I am so 'rare'. I accept that my case is not 'common' but it is in no way a 'rare' sight to see a hard working Thai who does not rely on connections to progress. Most of my Thai friends work while they were studying. Most of them aren't dirt poor & just want to be independent. There are even some who are less well-off & live at temples so that they can study.

Having said that I do understand there are some people who are so unfortunate that they have a lot less opportunity that many others. I understand there are people who cannot afford to sutdy and are forced to work for pittance. And that is a disgrace. If I have a chance to do something to change that, I would.

The point is, some people & especially the media, don't want to hear/see/know about this side of Thai society. It's not interesting enough for them. So many people would rather see Thailand as the land of sex tour and loose/easy women you can buy and the media gives them exactly that.

It's a misconception to think that most of the women who are not in prostitution are in such a high social position. There are such thing as 'self made' in Thailand too. My parents' families are originally from an agricultural background. But they do work hard and that's how they get to where they are. I have a fraction of chinese in my blood, so I look different from native Thais. But that's as much chinese as I have in me.

I agree that there should be more opportunities for Thai people from different social classes. However, from my years of living/working/studying abroad, I don't think the class system is that much more different in other countries. Class system still exist, just in a more subtle way.

And also, other countries have mail order brides, prostitutes, BG etc etc too. I just don't understand why Thailand stands out so much in this matter. I have nothing against the mail order brides & prostitutes. The thing that annoys me is stupid ignorant foreigners pestering me about details of the scene & treating me with absolutely no respect citing this or that stupid programmes they saw as authorities to dismiss my background as 'oh-so-unusual' or worse still 'a lie'.

I'm just pissed off that some people seriously think all Thai women are involved in the sex trade and can't believe that I have never ever been involved in anything like that.

Anyway, I just want to vent my annoyance a little bit. Sorry if I waste the forum space.

It is true that there is this kind of prevalent prejudice about Thai women stating that they are ALL in one way or another prostitutes.

But remember wat prejudices are:

I understand your point D8O, but I've made my peace with it already, well I try. I remember the times when every mention of Thailand would be followed with some statement regarding prostitution or patpong, really gets on your nerves! But it is getting a LITTLE better with more concentration on the tourism side of it. In the end you can't change the perception of everyone but what you can do is to educate those foreigners that you do meet in hopes that they'll pass this info on to others and shed some light on the subject.

An update. The Thai mail order bride arrived tonight. I honestly don't know whether any of the posters here would find it offensive....or hilairious. For a start she is an obvious Chinese not Thai....but like a Chinese out of a 60's Carry On film with the most ridiculous accent you have ever heard....don't know whether I'm offended (and I'm a bloke) cos I'm not sure they are just playing it for laughs so it probably is negative stereotyping of the worst kind....

If you think this story line is bad how about this?

About 7 years ago the story was, wait for it somone went to Thailand and was arrested for importation of heroin,yes bringing smack from the U.K. to Thailand.

They used some Thai women and a couple of Thai men from Manchester but they couldn't speak any lines because of equity rules.
