BANGKOK: -- Tuk-tuk taxi drivers voiced support for a proposal of the land transport chief to curb the number of tuk-tuks on Bangkok streets, reasoning that the number of tuk-tuks now is oversupply.

Tuk-tuk drivers were asked to comment on a recent idea by the director-general of the Land Transport Department Mr Sanit Phromwong who said tuk-tuks need “birth control” after their numbers in Bangkok have risen to more than 9,000.

He said the number was considered excessive and made it difficult for authorities to supervise and control quality services.

Tuk-tuk drivers at Phan Fah Leelart bridge said they agreed with the proposal to curb new registration of tuk-tuk taxis.

One driver Thongyoo Phumpanwong said passengers now have more choices to travel on public transport while tuk-tuk drivers now earn less revenue from driving.

There are now lots of motorcycle taxis, taxis, thus making tuk-tuk drivers to make less earnings, he said.

Another tuk-tuk driver Somklieng Surapol said now tuk-tuk drivers earned not enough forcing many of them to have supplement jobs to make end meet.

At the same time tuk-tuk customers said they chose tuk-tuk rides because it was convenient and could load more things at lower fare.

Im glad I read the whole story not just the headline ! I was starting to have thoughts of stopping intercourse in Tuk Tuks and I thought it would be like Mission Impossible the way most of them drive anyhow !!!!!

The story fails to mention a key reason Tuk Tuk business is down. That is, over the past few years many of the Tuk Tuk drivers have become cheats and liars. I used to take a lot of Tuk Tuks, but not any more.

This article is worthless. What is the Land Transport Dept proposal? If it is to limit the number of TT licences to (say) nine thousand and they have already issued nine thousand and it's too many then isn't it reasonable that the existing licence holders would agree that no more should be issued.

Here's my suggestion. The Land Transport Dept immediately propose a lottery to revoke four thousand existing licences reducing the fleet to maximum of five thousand.

Tuk Tuk drivers and any other form of Asian private/public transporters are born to cheat/pilfer/ assault/rape/lie/ misguide/threaten given that it's in their genetic code.its called:

#9 The Land Transport Dept actually got their priority upside-down; they should be reducing more TUK-TUK on the busy Bangkok roads because they are a danger to the road users, their customers and themselves. They often charges exorbitant prices for short journey, make dangerous U-turns and parked on walkways meant for pedestrians.

Then again, why do many foreigners love to travel by TUK-TUKs in Bangkok when they always charged more than taxis/motor-cycle riders for the same distance travelled, drives dangerously on public roads, are uncomfortable to sit on especially with the extreme humidity and the air pollution from the car exhausts is almost unbearable?

Because they are tourists and tuk tuks are an iconic image of Thailand. That's why. It has nothing to do with price these days.

When I spout the positives of Thailand I never include the tuk-tuk service.

It is a scourge on the countries image.

I say put meters on the tuk-tuks and then watch the number of tuk-tuks decrease.

or - ban all tuk-tuks from picking up foreigners - simple enough - foreigners will get used to it quickly and tuk-tuk numbers will shrink like a post-coital monument.
