BANGKOK: -- A group of motorcyclists lodged a petition with the Central Administrative Court on Monday asking for the temporary revocation of a traffic regulation banning motorcycles and tricycles from 45 flyover bridges and tunnels in Bangkok, according to Post Today Online.

The 80 plus petitioners were given morale support by some 400 motorcyclists who showed up at the Central Administrative Court when the former lodged the petition against the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Metropolitan Police Bureau and the Highways Department.

On behalf of the petitioners, Mr Atchariya Ruangrattanapong, told the media that the ban has caused hardships to many cyclists who are deprived of the right to use the 45 flyover bridges and tunnels.

Although the bridges and tunnels do not have designated space for motorcyclists, he said that the shoulders of the bridges and tunnels have enough space for the cyclists and authorities concerned should be able to designate the space for the cyclists instead of banning them altogether.

If you pay road tax for your bike you should able to use any road where vehicles are allowed.

If you are driving/riding like a prat then you should be treated as such.

Fines in Thailand have little or no effect.

Crushing your bike/car and giving it back to you as a front garden feature is the only way to make people wake up.

if they stick to the one lane that is designated for bikes only fine but as we all know this will never happen, they simply cannot stop weaving in and out of the traffic to get to where they are going as fast as possible. Not a day goes by when driving on the roads or riding that you get idiots on bikes going flat stick and cutting everyone else off, staying in the motorbike lane just doesnt happen. As I have said before, it is not the big bikes that are the problem, it is the step throughs and smaller bikes that think they are invincible.

They also have enough space for emergency parking for EMS, vehicle accidents and breakdowns!

if a drunk cop on a big bike can't get across the bridge without killing his girlfriend, who can?

I have been across this bridge many times before the ban on my Kawasaki big bike.

I drove very safely, unlike the Thais all around me.

No, you cannot have small 100 or 125cc bikes on tollways, over about 250cc, then fine.

'... Mr Atchariya Ruangrattanapong, told the media that the ban has caused hardships to many cyclists ...' Oh, please!! Plead your case, if you think you have one, but don't overstir the mix.

I drove Chang Wattana road today there and back over three flyovers with multiple motorcycles weaving in and out the traffic so many are ignoring the ban in the knowledge that the BiB are not waiting or if they are will accept the 'fine' and give them a receipt to drive were they like for the rest of the day. Personally, I think a blanket ban is wrong what they should focus on is policing to ensure that bikes stay on the inside shoulder on bridges and flyovers and not undertake except where traffic is stationary (LOL)

The Administrative Court would probably be using the world's largest shredder to deal with complaints against the government these days.

No chance.

There are several outdated laws on motorbikes in Thailand that need to be revoked not just this.

Pushbikes and the motorised food carts should be restricted not scooters and motorbikes that are more than able to keep up with the speed of the traffic flow.

The cops use these laws to pick up some money when things get tight towards the end of the month.

Of course, it's all part of the rampant corruption here.
