Can anyone give me the details about using american express travelers checks in thailand? Are they accepted and if so what is the charge for cashing them?

Posted

Yes you can use them and the surcharge is very small( I can't remember how much)

Better to get notes in higher denominations though,

Bangkok Bank, for example, charges 150 THB plus 3 THB per check as the fee for cashing. I also think (but am not certain) that the foreign exchange rate offered is lower than bank notes.

As mentioned above, larger denomination bills or cash withdrawal from an ATM (if you have a bank that reimburses ATM fees) is probably the better way to go.

Yep.

Take as much cash as you feel comfortable with plus some plastic.

Cash: best rates (as no fees), trouble free.

Lock in a (hotel) safe what's not needed.
