There is a thread on here that displays and comments on the effectiveness of this type of cooler. Basically they work in certain humidity levels and don't in others. But I can't be bothered to look for it.... Over to you guys.

For me these are the best inventions since sliced bread. Go to bed at night or during the day, put the cooler on to low or medium level and the room is comfortably cool and I sleep like a baby. Only 2 drawbacks is that the water runs out after about 3 hours and has to be topped up again and they do intend to be noisy. Unlike air conditioning windows and doors do not have to be closed and they are on wheels and can be moved anywhere with ease, also they do not consume a lot of electricity like air con.

I describe these units as being an in-between solution for fans and air conditioning and found that since this hot weather started I`ve had no reason to switch on the air con in my bedroom after I bought the portable evaporative coolers. I strongly recommend these coolers.

What is power consumption compared with AC units ? I know even my big 18 inch fan starts sucking down some power when used all day and I think maybe I should just go the extra mile and crank the AC.

0.73 amp, 160 watts on full power. I have the large size units with 18 inch fans. which has 3 settings, Low, medium and high. A 14000 BTU air conditioner wall mounted type is on average 4000 watts, just over 18 amps. Means an air con unit uses 25 times the amount of power.

That`s it for me, my brain is starting to ache so any more information please look it up on Google.

I can get by with fans during the day (have a huge ceiling fan in my Study that works great) but at night while sleeping I need it cooler. I generally set the air at about 27 C which is cool enough for me.

Try using Ear Plugs as the noise from the Air-Con seems to bother you. They take some getting used to so try wearing them in the day time to for awhile, and until they stop feeling strange in your ears. For me it is easier for me to fall asleep now with the TV on then just the Air-con by itself. Something about the starting and stopping noise from that wakes me up to.

Seems to have rained in Bangkok. Comfortably cooled down.

I was around Kanchanaburi today, looked like Apocalypse and had a dust storm I've never seen before but only a few drops there then

Have the AC blowing on the bed at around 24 C all night, every night of the year (apart from the cold snaps) and you'll sleep well whatever the temp.

if you live where ac can escape, then fix the problem.

A/C on 24/7; in this heat, who would want to do without it?

  • 4 weeks later...

if ambient temperature conditions are not suitable when you haveta concentrate, like in being in a paid position where you are expected to perform, then yeah, action is required...like a previous poster mentioned, for years now I go from AC accomodation to AC transportation to an AC office and back again and try to stay outta the weather and we're talkin' about 20 years in SEA and the ME...when I haveta spend time in harsh temperature and humidity conditions then my performance suffers and I notice that my asian and arab colleagues who have lived there all their lives feel the same...

more significantly, if the conditions are adversely affecting your rest then action is required NOW (and there's no lack of suggestions on this thread)...read the recent literature, bad sleep can be deadly...

I had the bedroom aircon serviced the weekend before last, and assumed it was the change in weather that lead to me feeling cold at night (yes, I know - stupid assumption - but who thinks in the middle of the night?).

Embarrassingly, it was only last night I realised the aircon service guy had changed the setting to 25C.... Wonderful when I went to bed, but distinctly chilly as the night wore on... biggrin.png

I have two purifiers in my bedroom, a negative ion generator and a decent aircon.

I also leave a bucket of salted water in a corner as well. I have had sleep problems in the past and a sleep specialist I saw back in Australia told me to have an ambient room temperature of 18.5 degrees at night when I sleep.

My aircon and power bill is 3200 baht a month so it is okay but I sleep every night with the air conditioning preset to come on an hour before I go to bed.

Going to the gym each day has been hell here in Chiang Mai and I am thinking of finding an air cooler for downstairs to sit in front of while I play with the computer and watch TV.

My partner has been losing business as her shop is not air conditioned but in time, we are hoping to buy the place when our rental contract comes due in 6 months time and if that happens, we will do a full renovation job.

Did you tell the sleeping specialist that you live in Thailand, hardly to expect these temperatures anywhere in the country.

Maybe you should consider moving to a more suitable country regarding the temperatures.

Don't really understand your post, but i can assure you there are some bloody hot areas in Western Queensland and many other places in the top half of Australia once you get away from the coastal areas, many just as hot and hotter.
