Information Minister promises more press freedom in Myanmar

NAYPYITAW: -- Media in Myanmar should be able to enjoy more freedom in the future as restrictive laws which were enacted by the previous government are to be amended, said Information Minister Pe Myint in Rangoon on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day on Tuesday.

The minister told The Irrawaddy that he intended to work with media organizations on how to proceed rather than acting alone in taking the matter to the parliament.

No specific timeframe was given regarding amendment of the restrictive media laws. But Mr Pe Myint said that the Myanmar Press Council would spearhead this endeavour.

The minister however said that his ministry would be responsible for the broadcast law whereas the MPC would review the news media law and media organizations could give recommendations over the next three months.

Is almost as though Myanmar is sucking up the last of Thailand's press freedom like some giant press freedom vampire. blink.png
