looking for well-established local company, top of the line cameras, good reputation, to set up home security system.

does an 8-camera configuration require two DVR boxes? IP digital (not analog) color, infrared cameras, fixed positions on 8 entry points, stream to mobile phone.

can you recommend a company? describe your system price?

Thank you.

Our top of the line security system was free to acquire, but running costs are 10-15k Baht per month. We don't even lock the door when we leave:

Yeah I know, not what you were looking for but at least it bumped your topic to the top again. Good luck with your search.

I looked at installing a high grade system, even had a Bangkok company come and quote. I am used to having high walls and a security system linked to armed response in my home country but realised here that all you get is a camera, recorder and a siren that everyone ignores. No link to police, no link to mobile armed response means that it actually a waste of money. So I gave up on spending a six figure sum for no real protection!

This can be a complicated subject and what you need depends on where you live, who comes into your premises and what you are trying to protect.

Cameras and Alarms are two different system for different needs and should not be confused.

Regarding Cameras:

It is easy to get an 8 Camera system either IP based, Cable based or hybrid. Most of the DVRs have an alarm trigger so that you can connect to the alarm system and trigger the alarm.

However normally they will cause too many false triggers unless the motion detection is setup precisely.

The main thing to be concerned with is the quality of the cameras and DVR and especially the software that comes with it to record and view remotely. There are too many options for me to cover here, but usually you get what you pay for. Many DVRs have bad remote software that can only be used with IE activeX. I use 3 Mega Pixel HIKVISION Cameras. They are dependable and work well.

Keep in mind that cameras won't deter professional thieves as they can easily put on a ski mask, etc. They are however very good for deterring maids, guests etc or less sophisticated criminals. The main problem is that the image quality especially in the dark can be lousy if you don't chose good cameras. They must have infrared. Lousy software can make it very hard to look through previously recorded video. The main benefit is that they do give you a piece of mind.

You may be better off just having fake cameras as a deterrent. You will get most of the benefit without the hassles of setting up, maintaining and checking real ones.

Security System:

In my view these are much more important and useful as not only do they sound an alarm when there is an intrusion, the better ones will call your mobile number to inform you of an intrusion.

The main consideration is getting good PIR detectors that have multi sensors to minimize false alarms. They also have to be positions correctly. Should be easy to get someone to install a system. However a lot depends on if new or existing construction.

Remember that someone can short the electricity of your home and render the phone system inactive. So you need one with mobile capabilities with everything connected to UPS.

I use a BOSCH Security system brought from the US and installed when I built my home.

Just a note if you're thinking of installing Hikvision equipment, the software that operates the NVR (recorder) and hence the cameras when in use does not work on OSX more recent than (I think) v10.5 despite claims to the contrary on Hikvision's website. The cameras are very good and I agree that 3MP is the minimum for any kind of decent pictures.

8 cameras on one NVR is no problem.

Just to clarify, the hikvision software that comes with the cameras does work with OSX and the quality is great! what Greenside is referring to is the HIKVISION DVR that records the feed from the cameras.

I use an Avermedia hybrid DVR with my hikvision cameras, it also has the same problem with OSX. I think most of them have the same problem that they use an ActiveX component and can't be used with OSX and Linux. while you can view the cameras directly using the web app on OSX and the picture quality is great, that means you have to view one camera at at time. Instead I use a mobile app call IP CAM Viewer, its a really nice mobile app that lets me view almost any brand of camera at the same time. For OSX there is also IP Camera Viewer that works with most cams.

Another thing that I should mention. Security lights go a long way to deter criminals. Those are lights that go on automatically at night when there is motion. Placed around the house I think they are a good investment and give you additional piece of mind.

I didn't use a company.  I bought motion detectors from Home Pro and put them on my doors and in living room.  If motion the system calls me.  I installed two IP waterproof 350 degree cameras (day and IR night) outside and two inside that will do motion too but I just check them with my phone.  The cameras have 5 pre set positions.  Under 20,000 for the whole system.  3bb will record for cheap monthly price and I have 64 gig memory cards in the cameras.

Chinese cameras VSTAR.  Software many choices Eye4 and PNP VSCam

There's a shop in Panthip that seems to specialise in this stuff. Maybe have a wander down and have a chat to them (unless they got wiped out in the Big C build).
