Spaniard family rescued from sinking yacht off Libong Island in Trang

TRANG: A Spaniard family of four were rescued from sea off Koh Libong in Kantang district of Trang province early Saturday morning after their rented yacht capsized upon hitting a reef.

Libong island village headman Abdulrohim Kunraksa alerted Trang Port In-Port Out Control Centre at 03.00 am today a rented yacht with a yacht was seen sinking off Koh Libong.

After alerting authorities, the headman then mobilised a dozen of villagers with their boats out to the sea to help.

They plugged the family out to the shore and also pulled the capsized yacht to shore safely.

The family, parents and sons, said they rented the yacht from Langkawi port in Malaysia to sail to Phuket.

As the yacht arrived near Koh Libong, they encountered turbulent sea.

As they tried to sail to take cover near an island, it hit a reef and capsized.

They said they frequently rented anchorage at Phuket port to anchor the vessel when they sailed from Malaysia’s Langkawi port to Thailand’s Phuket island for tour.

Well done by the locals, not only saving the family, but towing the yacht to shore. Above and beyond.
