Mor Chit 3 bus terminal to be built in Rangsit

BANGKOK: -- The current 70-rai Mor Chit 2 northern bus terminal will be downsized and serve short distance destinations, while new terminal, Mor Chit 3, for buses serving long distance destinations will be relocated to a new site at Rangsit in the northern outskirt of Bangkok.

This was agreed upon at the meeting attended by the heads of the State Railway of Thailand, the Transport Co. Ltd. and the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority.

Deputy transport minister Mr Omsin Cheevapruek presided over the meeting aimed at easing traffic congestion at the Morchit 2 terminal, and finding new site for northern bus terminal as the SRT plans to reclaim its land currently used as Mor Chit 2 terminal and an adjacent car park from the BMTA by 2018 to construct its Red Line electric train from Bang Sue in Bangkok to Rangsit in Pathumthani.

According to Mr Omsin, the SRT has set aside a 7.3 rai plot of land on Kamphaeng Phet road for the BMTA to build its new parking facility.

But for the Transport Co’s current 70-rai Mor Chit 2 terminal on Kamphaeng Phet 2 road, it was agreed that the terminal will be downsized to a 16.7-rai facility serving short-haul buses when it relocates to the new location in Rangsit.

The construction of the new BMTA car park costing about 50 million baht is expected to begin in July and be completed by June next year.

It was also agreed that the new northern bus terminal or Mor Chit 3 serving northern and northeastern bus routes will be built on parts of the Transport Co’s 45-rai property in Rangsit currently serves as a bus maintenance and repair depot, now directly opposite the Future Park Rangsit shopping mall.

The new site will have less traffic problems as it is in the northern outskirt of Bamgkok, Mr Omsin said.

The downsizing of Mor Chit 2 on Kamphaengphet road and the building of Mor Chit 3 in Rangsit will cost about one billion baht, he said.

He added the new bus terminal in Rangsit will greatly ease traffic jams and overcrowding problem during the festive season.

He said the ministry would speed up budget allocation for the relocation of the bus terminal.

If these burochrats think there will be no traffic congestion in Rangsit, they need to get out more.

Anyone who has alighted a bus or taxi at future park Rangsit knows it is absolutely horrendous, the traffic here is some of the worst I've ever seen in Bangkok, weekends are typically even worse.

Good luck with that one.

Ah, wonder if this is part of the massive weed cleaning effort, burning and bulldozing, going on on the north of Home Pro area, up both two sois, all on the east side of the main highway.

If so, sure, will complicate things a tad for both U-turns there on the north side of Rangsit, and for those folks going to Future Park from the west, Pathum area, but not too much for those coming in from the east, Ongkarak on Hwy 305. Unless, going to the Rangsit Market, then screwed....

Just another changing traffic pattern in the 20 years and two weeks I've lived out on 305.

Any indication that the new terminus will link up in any way to other public transport systems? Or will it be conveniently located only a short but unwalkable distance from a railway station?

Walkable, no. Have you tried walking around the outside of future park? You will be about a 10 minute drive from the new red line station, I am sure there will be a minivan from future park to the station.

The same traffic engineers that designed the Future Park traffic flow are working on this project.

Of course not.

Integration of public transport is an alien idea.

Besides the taxi mob must be kept content.

I just hope they put a good bus route to the airport , preff via the outer ring road !!

It isnt that bad walking on the outside of Future Park. Not great I admit but not too bad

...from 70 rai to 7 rai....???

..unless they also mean to reduce the number of vehicles...???

Just cut to the chase and build it Chiang Mai.
