BANGKOK: -- Police are hunting a driver who failed to stop for repairs though his bus was experiencing gear problems.

After reaching Pa Ngam the high point of the hilly area in Wang Nam Khiaw on Route 304 he failed to stop for repairs. Instead he went down the hill unable to engage the gears. The runaway double decker bus, full of passengers hit a passenger van and a pick up causing many more injuries. The bus came to rest by the side of the road with its roof open to the night air. The driver of the vehicle, run by Sri Monkhol Khon Song Co Ltd, fled the scene. The bus plies the Ubon - Pattaya route reported Daily News

The accident happened around midnight this morning. Police found one person dead on the bus. Almost four dozen people from the bus and the two other vehicles were taken to several local hospitals. Seven seriously hurt were later transferred to other larger hospitals.

Passengers told police that the bus - that had earlier picked up people from Nakorn Rachasima - was experiencing problems with its gears but on reaching the top of the hill the driver did not stop to do repairs. I'm not exactly the current govts biggest fan, but they can't really be held responsible for this.

You'd think that leaving the scene especially where there's passengers would attract extra punishment but sometimes the ' punishment ' barely reflects anything at all let alone any aggravations.

Even the little bitch who wiped out the occupants of a minivan remained at the scene. Oh sorry that was only so she could keep texting and look what didn't happen to her in court.

Only because mummy and daddy were caught in the traffic jam she caused delaying her being picked up..

Lost for words to describe such stupidity.

Let's hope Thai shows some justice when they catch this guy and charges him with murder for those passengers. Surely his neglect was premeditated which led to those deaths. However, being this is Thailand he will probably get a small fine and no jail and the families of the dead will be offered a few thousand baht compensation.

Understanding their role as a coach driver,

at some stage in the future has to be taught,

until then all who travel by coach, bus are at the mercy

of incompetent drivers , owners, and the department of motor vehicle / government laws of the land,

Maybe when the total gets to 10,000 killed in one year they may decide to do something.

Shame and sham on LOS

it is truly amazing that they all run away and let the passengers fend for themselves, shocking , it reminds me of the captain of the costa concordia in italy, it just boggles my mind.

im a professional driver, and im appauled to see the way they drive, i just watched a clip of the crash in wich a truck slammed into some motorbikes killing 1, and he also slipped away un noticed. it very scary. dont watch the clip if u are easily offended, it is horendous, he must have been doing 100km/h in a big truck.

If the "government" cannot be held responsible who is responsible for setting rules and regulations? every-time you drive anywhere in this country you come across these idiots swerving all over the road, when they have to leave the fast lane as someone has the cheek to hold them up.sad.png

The minister for transport? is there one here, the whole department is a bloody disgrace! bah.gif

The rules and regulations are in place. Is it not the job of the BIB/local authorities/inspectors to enforce them?

The echelons of Thai society this government seeks to serve most definitely do not travel by overnight bus. Why should he be bothered?

Is it not the job of the relevant "dpartments" to ensure that the local authorities enforce the rules and regulation! Obviously they don't!

10,000, it's already nearly 30,000 / year and probably much higher if all deaths relating to road accidents were to be reported as such.

The enforcement of the rules at the local level should be the duty of the local officials. If they are not doing their job then it goes higher. This incident may cause an investigation into the local authorities by the govt, but it is ridiculous to blame the current govt for this incident.

How many more accidents need to occur before the government should take action?

I can't believe that anyone could excuse ANY (not just the current) govt for the lack of action that results in daily carnage on Thai roads.

They should also keep bus companies responsible for their buses, how they are maintained. Sure the driver is responsible here too (mainly) but companies should spend more on maintenance of their buses.

Once i drove with a bus from Mukhdahan to Pattaya. The VIP Bus was full so i took the normal Bus. That was the most <deleted>**ing trip i had ever. 13.5 hours trip. Only one driver. So,actually a wonder not more accidents happen.

Well, as much as the driver does have some responsibility, what about the bus company? It should be their responsibility to properly maintain the buses. But then I'm dreaming, right?

It is the drivers responsibility when on the road. The company is only liable for his irresponsibility in this case

I'm putting the blame on a lack of condom usage, no respectable education system, money over morals mentality and no rule of law. Yes, in that order!

The bus companies are all about making money, with the minimum of outlay, the fewest amount of drivers possible, cheaper to have the minimum employees working maximum shifts and basic maintenance procedures, meaning let the bus run until it`s falling apart and can`t run anymore.

Owning a bus or coach company in Thailand is highly competitive, the drivers are under tremendous pressure to arrive at their destinations on time even if it means no breaks and battling to stay awake at the wheel. I actually feel sorry for the driver who will probably take the fall for this accident, the fall guy for his company. The company should also share responsibility for this accident but I guess it will still be business as usual because drivers can be replaced, the insurance will pay for the written off bus, the family of the dead passenger and the injured have no hopes of getting paid compensation and will be all forgotten in a week until the next accident.

I wonder if she stayed at the scene having been told from childhood she never had anything to worry about as her family name and connections would see her through anything ?

Surely there is a hierarchy of responsibility in cases like this.

- the driver, for unsafe driving

- the bus company, for an unsafe vehicle

- the transport authorities, for failure to regulate bus industry health and safety

- ultimately, a succession of ministers, for failure to reform the regulatory system

I don't see the current government as solely responsible, nor as blameless...just like the previous governments were also partly to blame.

Blame can be apportioned.
