Phang Nga holds campaign for dengue prevention

Surapan Laotharanarit

PHANG NGA, 4 June 2016 (NNT) – A campaign has been organized in Phang Nga to raise public awareness of preventive measures against dengue fever after the number of patients in the province exceeded one hundred.

At Deebuk Phang Nga Wittayayon School, Phang Nga Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana presided over the launch of a campaign to protect people from mosquito-borne diseases, especially dengue fever. The campaign was aimed to encourage students at the school as well as public members to keep mosquitoes at bay through three methods, which are keeping their home organized, disposing of garbage correctly and putting a lid on all water containers.

As part of the campaign, Mr Phakaphong led over 300 participants, including public health officials, village health volunteers and students, in a parade to create public awareness of deadly diseases carried by mosquitoes as well as ways to eliminate their breeding grounds. The governor also handed out leaflets containing such information to local residents along the way.

During January to May this year, the number of dengue fever patients across Thailand was recorded at 17,170 people, with 14 fatalities, and the figure has been rising as the rainy season approaches. In Phang Nga, 101 people were diagnosed with the disease during the period. The infections were found within Khura Buri, Mueang, Takua Pa, Thai Mueang and Takua Thung districts.
