Phuket rubbish truck driver charged with reckless driving

PHUKET: -- Police have today (June 14) confirmed that the driver of an OrBorTor (local Administration Organisation) rubbish truck who is alleged to have crushed a motorbike which killed its driver while making a turn at a junction near Yacht Haven in Mai Khao has been charged with reckless driving.

Lt Col Salis Buthnongsaeng from Tha Chatchai police told The Phuket News this morning that the driver of the rubbish truck, 62-year-old Burohem Kijchamnan has been charged with reckless driving causing death.

He said, “This is unfortunate incident, Burohem insists that he did not see the motorbike drive next to his truck when the collision took place. After investigating the incident, we have charged Burohem with reckless driving. It is now down to the court to decide what penalty he will face.-”

That's an awful tall truck, look at how high the windshield (wind screen) is from the ground. Anything very close to the front of the truck would be very difficult for the driver to see. Not saying he's not at fault.

Anyone who drives here knows that many motorcyclists ignore turn-signals of a vehicle in front of them and undertake on the inside. As one poster had remarked there is a substantial blind spot kerbside from the driving position. Look at the height of the left-hand mirror.The truck looks fairly new so the hazard beacon and turn-signals were probably working; whether the driver signalled the turn is another matter Probably a deal to claim compensation from Or Bor Tor for the now deceased but uninsured motorcyclist.

The above assumes that the motorcycle was on the shoulder next to the truck.

That is why there is a mirror on the truck which covers the blind spot you refer to. whistling.gif
