PHUKET: -- A bevy of officials arrived at Asia Marina Pier in Rassada yesterday (June15) and arrested a Thai man for working as an illegal guide.

Tourist Police, Marine Police and officials from the Phuket Tourism Registrar Office arrived at the pier at 9:30am. They placed under arrest 41-year-old Minson Saechaow, who had just led 30 Chinese tourists off a tour bus and was about to lead them onto a ferry heading for Phi Phi Island.

The arrest came after police received a tip off, said police.

“Undercover officers were monitoring him for a while and when they saw him conducting a tour in the area they approached him and asked for his guide identification card, which he did not have,” said Lt Eakchai Siri of the Tourist Police.

Soon it'll be illegal for someone to give you directions if your lost - in case they "Guide" you.

I assume all real crime must be solved then. Welcome to Utopia.

Interesting, first they were going after Chinese, Russian and other foreign nationals working illegally as tour guides (this is a restricted profession only available for Thais) but when they ran out of those, they start arresting Thais? OK, I know this guy isn't registered as a tour guide, but at least he's Thai. Aren't there other more pressing crimes to be investigated?

I say "Let the illegal Chinese find their own darn guides!"

Being a guide in Thailand is a licensed job, same as being a teacher or taxi driver. It's a way to assure that they have the knowledge to talk about what/where they are guiding, have language skills and don't ripoff tourists.
They have different levels of the guide license with those that have the highest level are approved by TAT to work as tour guides for Thais traveling to other countries.

Well well, a Thai taking the job of another Thai, and grassed up by a fellow Thai. This place gets funnier by the day. :)

He speaks fluent Chinese and has been working as a guide for four months. Why the hell wasn't he licensed, not connected?

He obviously did not register and take the test. Straightforward process.

"Why the hell wasn't he licensed, not connected?" - didn't want to pay his dues.
