Doesn't Lost Bookstore have the same owner as Backstreet Bookstore ? I seem to remember his name might be George also (as well as the guy who had Gecko) ??

Someone is confusing their Georges. For a long time there were two in the used book game here in Chiang Mai. The American George is no longer here.

The book I found and bought:

Thai Reference Grammar

Was in very good condition, even though it was published about 15 years ago.

Helen James is the author, as I have above noted.

Good price!

I would have purchased two copies if there had been one more.

If anyone is interested in learning Thai, this seems like it would be quite suitable for elementary learners.

So, I am grateful that there are still a few good bookstores here that keep an inventory of the out of print books floating around Thailand, because, otherwise, you could not order something like this from a new online bookseller.

There are many other books in the shop which cover a wide variety of topics, but I had not planned to do book shopping today, and only stopped in in passing, wondering if there might be something relating to Thai language study that I had not seen.

There was.

Thanks!

(Having just checked on line, I would have paid an extra 130Bt for a new copy there, which I did not need. And, it seems that Helen James graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, PhD, which is a top school in the USA, as we all know. She had quite a career, too. So, glad I bought this book, and at a good price. Good for elementary level Thai, with decent printing, which I find important.)

Does having two copies provide twice the learning effect?

There are better Thai grammar books than the one your have plugged.

he may be a troll, but in the larger scheme of things, there is something almost kafkaesque or wg sebaldesque in his writing. a fictional travelogue where a nameless drifter saunters around chiang mai's red light district, solliiquizing about the seediness of life, he stumbles across a used bookstrore where he browses long out of print books as the proprietor quotes yeats. i want to hear more.

He is a nutter ,with some charm.(does not seem to show a nasty side as of yet ) .Will this run as long as the egg story ?Only time will tell .

You are a troll and if you have been in CM for a year you would know there are two lost bookstores the other is behind the star bucks next door to the going out of business book store know as geckos. Please keep you opinions about visiting bars to yourself as it really isn.t appreciated. I guess you saw the only two Thais who live in that area the fat one and the skinney one.

In fact, the main purpose of this post is to express my gratitude to the owner of a valuable Chiang Mai resource, a fine bookstore, of which there are now sadly too few.

I am sorry you do not seem to care for my style of writing expression, but I cannot now change just for you.

Perhaps someone will see this post, one who might not have been aware of this bookstore, just as I had not known of it, and be as grateful as I to know of it.

Regarding the other Lost Bookshop, I do not know where it might be.

I actually know very little about Chiang Mai, and I have no personal transportation, nor do I regret not having any.

Most of what I know of Chiang Mai, I see from the moving Rot Deng.

I like to walk, but I should probably actually go somewhere while I am walking, instead of just walking in circles each day which is what I do. 20 K the day before yesterday, in circles. But, with trees and flowers, and blooming bushes, so beautiful.

The reason I do not often go to bookstores is because the bookstores do not have the books I need, mostly for language study.

I have already visited Suruwobg, but there is little there for me, and same with the second largest bookstore opposite one of the Klangs.

Besides, I think I already have all of the Thai language books that I have ever heard of, except that one published by the University of Hawaii professor there, which is in 2 volumes, I forget the name.

I am not that interested in Ken Follett.

The walking in circles thingy interests me.

Maybe you could let is know how big the radius is?

George is a highly intelligent and literate man.

His bookshops are not in the Loi Kroh bar area.

What is your problem?

Agreed.

Great bookstore.

The Yeats was icing on the cake.

I very much appreciated it.

There is another book shop just a few metres further down---- owned by a chinese guy with lots of great books called----------

THE WONG FOO KIN BOOK SHOP

"Fat ones who do not smile and walk slow".

That's because they are too full of smoke and beer, and very unfit.

They don't smile because their wallets are getting empty

and it will cost them a fortune to get laid.

>>THE WONG FOO KIN BOOK SHOP<<

Most book shops dont have what i am looking for .Buying on line is the answer if you can wait .

ok perhaps someone can advise where the bookshops being talked about are exactly as there seems to be a lot of confusion.

secondly, pray tell how many other bookshops are there and where are they?

One thing I do not appreciate on TV is being lectured on the evils of bars in the LOS by pseudo intellectuals misquoting dead poets whilst wandering in circles in the outer boonies. It just does not cut-it.

In my humble opinion, anybody who is carless enough to lose a bookstore probably spends more than enough of their time in the adjacent bars.

I love books and I am always happy to find another bookstore, although I certainly won't be mounting an expedition to the far North to find the Lost Bookstore in the near future.

I can just imagine myself loaded down with maps, compass and pith helmet staggering from bar to bar, quaffing refreshment in each one as I pump the willing lasses for information on the last known whereabouts of this elusive literary trove (Its hell but somebody has to do it).

Stumbling at last, a mere shell of a human, into some dark hole lined with sad and tattered pre-owned tomes, "Dr George I presume", "the Queen sent me to find if it was true you were the fount of knowledge of Yeats in the mysterious East and to tell you to keep Ireland to yourself". We dont need another EU partner.

The only consolation would be buying a good book and retiring to the nearest bar to peruse the, hopefully salacious, content.

Ah joy.

I had all the local book stores scoped out my first week in Chiang Mai. Try the Chiang Mai University library if you get bored. It's free if you have a piece of ID to leave at the desk. Also, if you have transport, check out xyzfivestarbooks on the Ring Road west of Central Festival.

Then go back to your watering hole, enjoy a cool, frosty bottle of you favorite brew, and do something less mind-numbing the watching the 'boob-tube' or staring at a smart-phone which is dumbing down the populace of the world. I'd rather read a physical book (hardbound or paperback) any day of the week over reading it electronically. thumbsup.gif

That grammar book available here: http://www.asiabooks.com/thai-reference-grammar-12791.html

Same one?

Mac

Yes, same one.

I also found this online bookstore price, as I mentioned above.

It is a good book, however you need to be able to read Thai to use it well, because the romanization is not typical.

Very good grammar review book, to check if you know what you might think you know.

The book I have says 2000 copies printed.

It may for some.

But if I have another, I can cut the pages from the spine of one book, and then use a high resolution flatbed scanner to make an ebook for myself, and my friends.

Speed counts.

Radius is inconsequential.

I do 6.5 Kph, approx. But, not uphill.

Exactly!

Right on all counts.

I saw a guy at one bar in the morning, which was open to the street, and he had a beer belly the size of a medicine ball.

Looked like Swartenegger in that film where he gives birth to triplets.

Incredible.

HUGE beer bellies.

I have not seen the likes of it in my life, until this week.

I could not believe they could walk and remain upright, but since they can it must put an unhealthy strain on their poor spines.

If one could have only beneficial friends, rather than detractors, it would be good to have more friends.

Usually friends have their positive and negative aspects, and so having more or less friends is statistically without much benefit.

I have two friends that I know of. Maybe 3. But no more.

Aquaintences, I have mostly acquaintances.

The OP's entry really stands out. He calls the Lost Bookshop The Last Bookshop. It is not at all hard to find, staring with a Google search of Book shops, Chiang Mai. The proprietor, Mr. George O'Brien is a Chiang Mai institution. To know him is to love him. There is no other George worth mentioning, in the small world of CM bookshops.

There is NOT ONE BAR on the street where Lost is located. Next door is an excellent vegetarian restaurant. There are a few tourist oriented bar/restaurants a few hundred meters away on Moon Muang, but they are not sleazy. There are no bars anywhere near the companion shop, Backstreet Books, but a short walk south will get you to McD's or the Art cafe.

It's very exciting to hear that George has opened a third location. Also worth a strong recommendation is On the Road Books, across Ratchwithi St from the UN Irish Pub. Rob and his lovely family have built a fine shop there, which i hope shall thrive and prosper for many years. Both of these establishments are owned a run by very conscientious people, and are worthy of community support. We are very lucky to have them.

Not surprising that WonderousWand has so few friends if you keep vandalising books and ripping of the authors by photocopying and distributing illegally on the net!

I notice you bemoan the shortage of bookshops in Chaing Mai .Could this have anything to do with people downloading books from Pirate bay torrent site? .You mention the only reason you where looking for that book was because you couldn't download it for free from Pirate bay.

No, not on the net.. I only distribute to my 2 friends.

But mostly I scan for myself so that I can use OCR to do word counts and text manipulation.

I only download from P2P, never upload.

Probably THAT is why I have few friends.

The reason is due to Amazon type companies, and ebooks, and the internet.

Unfortunately, pirate Bay also has a very poor book collection.
