Hi there, I'm a UK Citizen (under 50), recently married to my Thai wife.

Up until this point I have been visiting her on a Double/Triple entry Tourist visa.

On this occasion, I arrived in Bangkok from Japan without a Tourist visa and was given 30 days on arrival, however, Immigration staff made it clear that I need to get a 90 Day Non O visa if I wish to

visit my wife in Thailand again which I totally understand.

With that said, I am trying to determine if its possible to obtain the required certification of my monthly income at the British Embassy in Kuala Lumpur rather than flying back home to the UK.

Any input from experienced members would be most welcome.

Thank you

a Multi-entry Non-Imm-O visa, on the base of being married to a Thai wife, will give you 12 months stay permit all in all. You firstly stay for 90 days, then extend this by 2 more months on any immigration. Actually it gives you 5 months of stay before you have to do a border run and activate another 90 days on return.

All is understood, that, If you do not intend to apply for the one year extension on base of marriage, then you just have to show the original marriage certificates upon application and some financial proof, like a bankbook. No need to be accompanied by wife. No 400.000 THB needed in the bank and also no other paperwork, no other documents.

As these bulks of documents are only needed if you apply for the one-year extension based on marriage, after having arrived in Thailand.

My understanding is that you can obtain a Multi-entry Non-Imm-O on the base of being married to a Thai, in any Thai consulate outside of Thailand, i.e. it's neighbouring countries. However I am not sure if this is the case and there being no need to return to the home country. Some other posters here might help

Thanks Greg, on the Malaysian Thai Embassy website I see a requirement of THB 100,000 but it doesn't specify if that's in a UK Bank or Thai Bank account.

On the UK website it says to provide proof of a salary, which I can do no problem, just curious if the rules are different outside of the UK.

Appreciate your time

The Thai Embassy in KL is not a good place to get any visa from. They usually require far more than the locations.

If you want a multiple non 'O' visa based on marriage the best place is Savannakhet, Laos as they do not require any financial proof.

yes, when i wrote "some financial proof", i meant that despite it being handled differently from consulate to consulate, then still a certification of monthly income perfectly helps and will be accepted. Also a bank book with some cash like 100,000 THB is ok, but the income certificate that prooves the money comes from overseas is sufficient.

The bank book can either be a Thai bank or an U.K. bank

Does the same apply for the initial 90 day application? this is the first time I have applied for a Non O.

Happy to go to Laos.

I like to throw in. there is nothing such as an "initial 90 day application". You apply for a Non-Imm-O based on marriage and it is automatically good for 12 months. It's just that you will have to do a border run (and have a re-entry-permit) to activate 90 more days of this 12 month period

when planning to stay a little less than 5 months, shortly before the 90 initial days are over you can extend for 60 more days on any immigration. This will give you 5 months before you have to do a border run.

That's why I suggested a Multi Entry Non-Imm-O as it saves you headaches about buying re-entry permits

from all that i hear & read, the consulate in Savannakhet, Laos seems to be the most convenient & lenient one. And so is Vientiane, Laos.

I assume your aim is for a 1 year extension of stay based on marriage, but heres a brief summary of options.

If you are already in Thailand (visa exempt entry) and can deposit 400K in a Thai bank OR can show a certified (by your Embassy in Bangkok) income you can convert your visa exempt entry to a non 'O' visa/entry at Bangkok immigration. This admin process results in a new 90 day non 'O' entry and you can apply for a 1 year extension of stay within the last 30 (maybe 45) days.

If you want a single entry non 'O you can get it in Vientiane or Savannakhet, Loas without any financial proof. This gives a 90 day stay and you can apply for a 1 year extension of stay within the last 30 (maybe 45) days.

If you want or plan to leave regularly you can get a multiple entry non 'O' visa ONLY from Savannakhet without proof of income/funds. You'll need to leave every 90 days, but you can apply for a 60 day or 1 year extension of stay for any 90 day entry.

100% clear now, thank you.

The one remaining question I do have about this part >> OR can show a certified (by your Embassy in Bangkok) income you can convert your visa exempt entry to a non 'O' visa/entry at Bangkok immigration

I called the British Embassy in Bangkok and they mentioned that the only certified income letter they can provide is a Pension related letter (please see below their response)

She said "I would like to confirm that I have received your email dated 29 June 2016 and I will be processing the pension letter for you."

and gave me a link to this document > https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/533886/Pension_01_07_16.pdf

I did explain that I'm not receiving a pension but this seems to be the best they can do.

Thai immigration will accept any form of income.

If you look at the UK Embassy link it says "Pension/Income". All you need to do is provide proof of your income whether it is pension, investment, employment etc.

Although they say "pension letter" it is an income letter.

Why not go for a Thai wife visa? Then with 90 day reports you can stay 1 year

Can you explain what a Thai wife visa is.

Any visa he could get would require leaving every 90 days.

Nothing to do with "calling it what you want". It is what it is?

A twelve months extension of your permision to stay for the reason of having a Thai spouse.

Unless it has changed since 2014, I changed my visa exempt to a 90-day non-o at immigration in Bangkok. No financial proof needed.

Thai Wife extension call it what you want. You have a 90 day report but you can stay for 1 year

Calling it what you like is what causes confusion.

What you are talking about is NOT a visa. A multiple-entry non-imm O IS a visa. What you are talking about is an extension of stay based on marriage. They are nothing alike. Applying for the two is entirely different and the conditions for each are entirely different.

You (may have) changed it to a non-imm O ENTRY, but financial proof would have been required since you are basing your conversion on either evenutally applying for an extension of stay based on marriage or retirement, both of which will require either proof of money in a Thai bank or embassy certified income.

Nothing in that regard has changed since 2014.

I guess they just forgot to ask for mine.
