BRT system proposed in Phaholyothin transportation center



BANGKOK, 7 July 2016 (NNT) - The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) has proposed a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system within the developing Phaholyothin transportation center.

The OTP held its third public forum to publicize its environmental impact assessment on the BRT proposal. The forum proposed the use of a BRT system as a means of public transportation within the 2,325-rai area. The bus route would cover 16 stations, as well as the main transportation center, over a distance of 10 kilometers.

The proposed BRT system is expected to cost 1.8 billion baht. A 1.3-kilometer sky walk to connect with Bang Sue and Chatuchak MRT stations and Mo Chit BTS station has also been proposed. The skywalk would have a budget of 1.5 billion baht.

Both the BRT and sky walk projects are expected to be completed by 2020, coinciding with the completion of another electric train line linking Bang Sue and Rangsit. Both the BRT and skywalk projects will be open for long-term concession contracts for private companies.

The input gathered from the forum will be incorporated into the project’s proposal to the Cabinet at end of this month.
