BANGKOK, 9 July 2016 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has assured the public that the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) will be tasked with maintaining peace and order during the referendum, not to influence the outcome.

The prime minister said military officials from the NCPO will look after safety and security matters related to the referendum, but will not get involved in how the poll will turn out.

He said the NCPO will refrain from making suggestions or doing anything that can build paranoia about the referendum.

He also asked all sides to remain calm and let the justice system play its part while calling on the public to be eyes and ears for authorities.

He commented that should everyone cooperate and together work to achieve the same goal, the nation will surely move forward and the prolonged political and social conflicts will fade out.

Hmmm military will not interfere, little bit late for huh? The military interfered a long time ago, like hand picked people to write the draft and what to put in and what to take out. When that one failed military shuffled a few people around then told the drafters ok same rules on the draft apply but tweak the wording a little more.

Now criminalize any public discussion and debate of the draft while claiming people have the right to talk about it but gaoled if you give an opinion of it the vote as they please.

Yea right, that's why they are deploying the troops at voting booths and threaten to arrest those that speak out against it. We will not meddle as long as you vote yes and keep your mouth shut.

The civilian government that followed the Prem Tinsulananda government was run by the prime Minister Chatichai Choonhavan, a scion of an elite family.

His government was equally corrupt but gave more power to civilian politicians to loot the country rather than army officers.

It became known as the “buffet cabinet” for the enthusiasm with which ministers helped themselves to the spoils of office.

The military soon decided it was time for another coup. Suchinda’s junta seized power in 1991 with the approval of the king.

The coup leaders promised to clean up Thai politics and restore democracy.

When these claims proved hollow, the elite networks were blindsided by another mass uprising, this time by the middle class. (unlike the student uprising of 1975).

After seizing power from the elected government in 1991, Suchinda’s Junta began work on a new constitution. The proposed charter was a severe setback for democracy, with several clauses designed to perpetuate military dominance of politics even after elections were held.

On the 19th November, 1991, more than 70,000 people rallied in protest against the proposed charter, the biggest mass protest since 1973.

A poll which surveyed 312,357 people found 98.8 percent were against the draft constitution.

Elections were set for 1992 and pro-military parties won a majority of seats. Suchinda who had previously promised to step aside after democracy was restored, announced he would have to become Prime Minister after all to “save the nation”, weeping as he spoke.

History has a habit of repeating itself.

Military meddling caused this daft referendum in the first place.

Or it was caused by corrupt, thieving, vote buying, lying politicians that for many years could not stop thinking about themselves long enough to create a conditions in the country that would enable everyone to live in peace, harmony and prosperity.

Then there is the junta's tv show which is "binding all hearts", ....

August 7, the Referendum That Binds All Hearts.

... so far, only members of the Election Commission, the charter’s drafters and junta-appointed members of the interim legislature have appeared on the three episodes aired since it started June 27.

Wednesday evening’s episode was to feature Chulalongkorn University lecturer and land rights activist Prapart Pintobtang, the first guest not associated with the pro-charter camp.

The episode may be pre-empted by a women’s volleyball game.

The Military will not interfere this will be a free and fair referendum. In which you will vote for what the Military wants or they will re educate you to understand why?

So why are they sending out thousands of so called teachers to encourage people to vote(yes) and setting up so called "peace centers" throughout the country.

"He commented that should everyone cooperate and together work to achieve the same goal, the nation will surely move forward and the prolonged political and social conflicts will fade out."

Surely the above sentence is actually a statement to encourage people to vote yes, exactly what the government wants. So even now the army are still meddling. The same goal is for the referendum to pass, then have the sham elections then have more military controlled governments, a way of trying to portray to the world that Thailand is truly a democratic nation.

Will not meddle? Seriously?

"What kind of referendum criminalizes, shackles and imprisons citizens for campaigning against the content of the charter draft?....

The criminalization of any campaigning for or against the junta-sponsored charter draft makes no sense for a referendum that should be a process where people can deliberate and campaign freely about the content.

The public should be able to get as many opposing views and as much information as possible before making a decision in a plebiscite.

And this is taking place while the military regime exploits its dictatorial power to ensure that only positive information about the referendum airs on all TV and radio stations in the lead up to the referendum." http://www.khaosodenglish.com/opinion/2016/07/09/bizarre-referendum-process/

Would show you the real interests Thai have. With a bit of betting on the side probably.

I have started to read the charter draft (yes, it is available in english, it was posted on Thai visa last week). Just the preamble alone is filled with lies. Can't wait to get into the meat of it. cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

So, the soldiers are going to be a Peace-Keeping Force - Should be wearing Blue Helmets then!

Isn't that called an oxymoron, seeing as the Military designed the charter for their own purpose one can hardly see them actually protesting about it , that would be the definition of Thai meddling, anything else would be regarded as intimidation , harassment , corruption , obtaining vote by deceitful means , whatever, .........................coffee1.gif

Perhaps you guys have not gotten the most recent updates to the official Thai-English dictionary, as follows:

NNT reports where officials "affirm" = fib

NNT reports where officials "assure" = prevaricate
