Judging by a large number of the negative posts across the various sections of TVF I would have thought there'd be a queue of expats lining up for tickets so they could join in with a good old singalong to " Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now"

Say what you like about Morrissey, and I dare say this topic will bring the axe-grinders out, but the guy was a brilliant lyricist. I'm not familiar with his recent stuff though, how does it compare to his earlier work?

And Johnny Marr, one of the best songwriters of the 90's and a vastly underrated guitar player too. As HooHaa said above, shame he won't be there.

Love me some Smiths... even if it did make me want to slash me wrists sometimes wai2.gif

The Boy With The Thorn in His Side, what lyrics! I'd give my left nut to write a lyric like that, frustrated part-time with the emphasis on AMATEUR songwriter that I am.

"The Boy With The Thorn In His Side"
The boy with the thorn in his side
Behind the hatred there lies
A murderous desire for love
How can they look into my eyes
And still they don't believe me
How can they hear me say those words
And still they don't believe me
And if they don't believe me now
Will they ever believe me?
And if they don't believe me now
Will they ever believe me?
The boy with the thorn in his side
Behind the hatred there lies
A plundering desire for love
How can they see the love in our eyes
And still they don't believe us
And after all this time
They don't want to believe us
And if they don't believe us now
Will they ever believe us?
And when you want to live
How do you start?
Where do you go?
Who do you need to know?

Great, great lyrics! clap2.gif

This is my favorit:

Girlfriend In A Coma"

Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know - it's serious
Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know - it's really serious
There were times
When I could
Have 'murdered' her
(but, you know, I would hate
Anything to happen to her)
NO, I DON'T WANT TO SEE HER
Do you really think
She'll pull through?
Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know - it's serious
There were times when I could
Have 'strangled' her
(but, you know, I would hate
Anything to happen to her)
WOULD YOU PLEASE
LET ME SEE HER!
Do you really think
She'll pull through?
Let me whisper my last goodbyes

I know - IT'S SERIOUS

A Blur song written about Morrisey which just about sums him up perfectly.

Charmless Man.

I met him in a crowded room
Where people go to drink away their gloom
He sat me dawn and so began, the story of a charmless man
Educated the expensive way, he knows his Claret from a Beaujolais
I think he'd like to have been Ronnie Kray
But then nature didn't make him that way

He thinks he's educated, airs those family shares
Will protect him that we will respect him
He moves in circles of friends
Who just pretend that they like him
He does the same to them, and when you put it all together
There's the model of a charmless man

He knows the swingers and their cavalry
Says he can get in anywhere for free
I began to go a little cross eyed
And from this charmless man I just had to hide

He talks at speed he gets nosebleeds
He doesn't see his days
Are tumbling down upon him
And yet he tries so hard to please
He's just so keen for you to listen
But no one is listening
And when you put it all together
There's the model of a charmless man
