PHUKET: -- A project costing more than B500 million is underway to upgrade Phuket Town’s drainage capabilities in order to prevent the town from flooding after huge seasonal deluges.

“The central government granted Phuket City Municipality a budget of B517 million to solve flooding issues and to improve the drainage system in Phuket Town,” Thawee Homhoun, Chief of the Phuket Provincial Office of Public Works and Town & Country Planning, told The Phuket News today (July 27).

“We are in charge of this project and signed a contact on March 31 with the construction company Auang Sea Heang Co Ltd to complete the works needed,” he said.

“The construction company will start this project early in August, maybe as late as August 15, and the whole project will take about two and half years to complete,” Mr Thawee said.

“Once the projects starts, officials will need to reduce some of the roads where work is being carried out to one lane only,” he warned.

Much of these funds will likely be squirrelled away before one drainage pit is completed!!

the photograph does confirm the need for flood control.

hope it is a comprehensive rather than situational plan.

"the photograph does confirm the need for flood control." - why?

Phuket should look to the future, and new markets. Perhaps it could promote itself as "The Venice of South East Asia." biggrin.png

Tourists will be able to get a Thai gondola from their hotel, to a restaurant, to a bar etc. This flooding presents a great business opportunity for Phuket. smile.png

Good......However there have been an ongoing improvement (last 2-3 years) with electrical cables underground side by side of drainage pipes, new road surface/ walk paths in great areas of Phuket town do they now plan to dig that up again!!!???
