Tough life for policemen at Tha Thong police station in Yala’s Raman district

Besides the omnipresent threats from militants, the 35 policemen of Tha Thong police station in Raman district of Yala do not even have decent accommodation that they should have deserved.

Many of the men who are mostly single have to take refuge at a dilapidated police apartment which was abandoned by the contractor about a decade ago.

The unfinished five-storey building was designed to have 28 rooms for accommodation. But not a single room was completed. None of the rooms were painted. There is no running water nor electricity and there are leaks almost the whole building whenever there is heavy rain.

There are windows for each room but no window panes nor mosquito mesh screens. So, they resort to plastic sheets.

Because of the shortage of accommodation in the district, most of the policemen have no choice but to struggle with whatever they have.

Several spent their meagre pay to tap water and electricity from villagers living around the apartment.

But for the unfortunate ones who live on the 4th and 5th floors, there is no running water and they have to share bathrooms and toilets with their colleagues who live downstairs.

Tha Thong police station chief, Pol Lt-Col Parkpoom Rachai, who assumed the post about two months ago, said he tried to explain to his men about the bureaucratic process of budget allocation. But he hopes budget will be forthcoming next year to resume the construction of the apartment.

As a temporary relief, he disclosed that the station would be supplied with some knock-down accommodation.

If these men and women were in most other professions, I'd be able to mount some sympathy.  I see no reason why they should be comfortable while they line their pockets and exploit the citizenry.  Just move, or commit a crime while on camera and get moved to a cushy inactive post somewhere.
