Feeding the local Monkeys today

Featured Replies

I've no idea how many monkey we have near our home. At a guess, and it's a total guess we have a minimum of 300 it could be much more. There is at least 4 separate Troops, probably more then the outcasts and loaners. I feed them once or twice a day. they are good fun to watch.

Cuter than a barrell of bargirls. Both carry herpes though so don't get bit.

haha....never been bitten yet, but i'm not naive enough to think they won't. I never turn my back on them if they do get aggressive, although i have never once felt threatened. There's one Alpha male i tend to avoid as he does show signs of heavy aggression.

The wife is from down here so we have been coming to visit the monkeys for that time. Then we moved here around sept last year. it's only these last few months i've really spent any time with them. They are amazing to watch. I'm not a massive Animal fan, that doesn't mean i hate them, far from it, we have two of our own brilliant dogs and we feed two other semi soi dogs (one has an owner but always comes back to us)

I am glad these lot don't climb all over you like lots of these monkeys seem to do. they are sort of nervous of you, which is a good thing. I know the local kids give them a kick and i've been told there's poachers that come and take the babies. But, as an expat, as we all know, we keep our nose out of that side of things. it's not my place to do anything about that.

I was at a temple once in lophuri and the Monks gave me a huge container of bananas to feed about a zillion of them. They were all happy. Until I started to run out of bananas.  I was right in the middle. Then I remembered the herpe like virus that they carry. That transmits in there bites.

They are fun to watch though.

This lot are pretty good like that. I normally feed them plain peanuts. I buy 2/3 Kilos a day. It's pretty cool how they know you and how you actually get to know individual monkeys. There's an Alpha male i call "fluffy" haha. He's a right lump, but young, he's got a brilliant coat of hair on him and hard as nails. I've seen him take on three Alphas along with their hangers on and win easy, on his own,.

When i run out of peanuts they can tell and they just wander off. I try feed the pregnant mums and the skinny ones. Not always easy though. I also feed a real old girl, she is skinny but can still move but must be well into 30 years old.

Here's big Fluffy who will sit with me and eat out my hand and the old girl (she looks like a Bong Villain) i always feed, she's real friendly too.

Never used to be a fan of monkeys as they are FAR too similar to us....  but it was v funny watching one steal a tourists handbag in Khao Lak .  The monkey ran up a tree and was gradually throwing out various items in the handbag - but only threw the handbag down a long time later, when the tourist and friends had given up and got back on their coach.  The monkey lost interest as his screaming audience had gone !

I get where you are coming from. I have been coming to the area for ten years and every now and again we would come feed them then leave after 15 mins. Then we actually moved 5 minutes from them around sept last year. It's only about 2/3 months ago i thought to myself that i should really spend time round there as it's not often you have something like this on your doorstep.

It's amazing how you genuinely get to know faces and the character of the things. I know what you mean about the creepy side of them, especially the babies and their features.
