PHUKET: -- Chamroen Tipayapongtada, the current Governor of Phuket, will be transferred to the post of Governor of Nakhon Sri Thammarat province effective October 1, it was announced today (Aug 17).

Prime Minister’s Office Spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd revealed the news at a meeting with provincial governors in Bangkok today, reported the National News Bureau of Thailand (NNT) in a public notice posted.

The official who will take up the post of Governor of Phuket to replace Mr Chamroen has yet to be announced.

It seems these constant changes are geared toward a lack of continuity and prevention of progress. Let's wait for the new, new governor's vision of the future will be -- almost surely re-inventing a wheel that will come off again soon. To be honest, though, it is better to have an outsider in the position than a 'Son of Phuket' to avoid any possible accusations of vested interests.

Pinched from elsewhere but I think this sums it up. A 'Son of Phuket' was never the best choice , at the end of the day there would be too many influences on him that would force him into being a Lame Duck. He seems a nice enough chap but one will struggle to find any sort of tangible legacy at the end of his tenure.

The reason that governors only do two years maximum in the position, is to discourage corruption. The conclusion is that serving any longer than two years will inevitably mean close connections to local "dark" influences.

I recon the books he could write about his achievements would rate in the same category as, The Chinese book of manners, French war victories, How to be humble by Mohammad Ali and now his own book, How to achieve less than what you began with.

Next please...

Apparently, he's the "sworn enemy" of the taxi and tuk-tuk cartels. He's also a Phuket native.

Would be great if he was standing up to them. But the post after yours paints a different picture.

You are correct ... but it only encourages more corruption for the higher ups when the next big brown letter rolls in and the new governor has to recoup his outlay and make a profit as fast as possible.

Also how can any official make any real on the ground progress/improvement in just one or two years. It's all just a sick joke.

He was part of the taskforce that actually arrested over a hundred Karon drivers and the mayor.

They were all let go and nothing has been heard since. Yet again, justice is let down by the justice system.

The taxi cartel know full well that he was involved. Do you think their mentality leans towards forgiveness, or revenge?

One man cannot be expected to end the transport mafia problem, especially when these mafiosa are all voting, local Thais that control huge voting blocks.

Phuket will have to go down in flames before there will be a change in attitude by the local robber-barons.

What a shame then. At least he went down with his honour intact.

I think it is a pity. He seemed a nice enough man and IMO did what he could, which is more than others over these years.

Conversely, any Governor who is seen as a potential threat to the upward flow of money in the corrupt public sector as well as the criminal private sector is dispatched post haste.

What about the Mayors ?  They do not seem to be time limited as they are elected. Seems to me the various mayors are these local 'dark' influences in person ....

Yes, that is true. Phuket was given a governor who decided he was going to look at problems first-hand by traveling around Phuket on a motor-cycle.

He lasted four months until he was "transferred".

People under-estimate the influence of the rich, ruling elite in Phuket. They are Chinese-Thai and have close connections with the Chinese-Thai in Bangkok.

Makes me laugh when Thais claim to never have been colonized....

Mayors are voted in. Governors are appointed.

The mayors work for their puppet-masters whilst growing rich...

In response to LiK's previous post (sorry, I can't get the quoting function to work correctly)...

Absolutely true - the mayors are generally a very big, visible part of the problem. In Phuket, they're typically NOT elected by the general populace, but instead, elected only by the land owners, business owners and other influential people. Why? Because in Patong, for instance, the overwhelming majority of Thais that live here are ineligible to vote in local elections, leaving only these influential people to control the vote, and they vote for whoever will ensure them the highest financial gain. How can this happen? Simple, the majority of Thais living and working here rent their living quarters, and the landlords generally refuse to add them to their tabien baan, making them ineligible to vote here (although they can still vote in local elections back in Nokorn Nowhere).

Certainly won't be a lucrative in NST as Phuket

Probably not. However he'll feel right at home with the overwhelming criminal element and their 'mafia' overlords there.
