Homes in North and Northeast prone to flooding

  

LOEI, 22 August 2016 (NNT) - Rivers in several provinces in the North and Northeast of Thailand have flooded homes and riverside communities as water levels continue to rise. 

In the northeastern province of Loei, at least eight raft floating restaurants have been swept away into the Mekong River due to rapid sea level rise. Water from Laos is also expected to reach Loei in two days. 

Emergency officials have been deployed to monitor the river and to provide around the clock assistance to those in need as they fear the river could overflow the embankments. 

The water level in the Mekong River in Nong Khai continue to rise. According to the latest survey, the level was recorded at 11 meters high, but could reach a critical level of 12 meters in coming days. 

Nong Khai authorities have already closed sluice gates and drainage pipes that are connected to the Mekong River in order to prevent flooding in the city. Water pumps have also been set up at five different sluice gates should the municipality become inundated. 

Around 2,000 sand bags have been prepared and will be distributed to local residents if the situation exacerbates. In the northern province of Phayao, at least ten homes and 1,000 rais of farmland near the embankments have been flooded following continuous rainfall over the weekend.

Someone ought to check before they write reports.  Total misinformation as Loei is not on the  Mekong, it is on the Loei River, which is a tributary.  Also, there are no floating restaurants.
