Yes Don ...that was why I queried Mr Wow ... as thought his truck should be under warranty and surly Ford would not make that mistake nor would anyone with a vehicle under warranty take it anywhere else but to the dealer.

Iam 90% sure the 2.2's suffered the same problem.

I heard a rumour in 2014 Ford changed the oil pumps to eliminate the problem though.

As far as I know it's still a swash plate pump. Next time I go past the dealer I'll stop and ask my friendly english speaking Tech what the status is now. I only asked him something via LINE yesterday ... so don't want to pester him again. I only had the first service four days ago ... guess I should have asked then. He definitely  took it for a test drive after service and before it was handed back.

To be honest, there's only been two chaps with major Ranger engine issues that raised their heads above the parapet but both have been rather quiet of late so we don't know how it all panned out. There's no denying that they both appeared to receive crap service but both owners didn't seem too specific on what happened at the time.

So in perspective, that's a couple of serious complaints versus how many happy Ranger owners?

What's that about "the 3.2 oil change problem"?

Agree that the 2.2 has more than enough pull for highway driving (and the 4 cylinder 2.2 engine is quieter than the 5-pot 3.2) and the 3.2 only really comes into its own when hauling and towing.

I am still driving my old 2001 Ford Ranger with 340,xxx km on the clock. I have replace the radiator once, tyres and batteries several times and all the dents and scrapes except one are mine. I would like a new 2.2 6 speed auto  then I can toss mine in for a major overhaul ready for the next 350,xxx km.

Other than the badges on it not much of it is Ford.

I purchased a Ford Ranger 2.2 Hi Lander about 4 months ago from Ford Sawang Daen Din, Jackie the sales manager is a real trooper and bent over backwards to accommodate, however was firm with his bottom price, and has been great at after sales advice, it now has 20,000 kilometres on the clock since I purchased it, runs very smoothly.

Great vehicle, never had a problem, 1st service the other day, vehicle cost 800,000 baht on road with full insurance, matts, wind resisters on doors, and rubber tray in the back, paid 3,000 baht optional for M3 window tinting 60/40, worth every baht.

The extra cost about 145,000 baht for the Wild Track wasn't justifiable for me, e.g. TV, Sat nav, and rear spoiler thing, I purchased a rear cover with auto lifter for 27,000 baht installed, same colour as vehicle.

I would call Jackie at Sawang Daen Din Ford, he speaks really good English and is keen to make bottom of the line sales, he has big turn over compared to the rest of the dealers here, who all appeared not interested when we shopped around.

If you want his number, send me a message, as he has sold Fords all around including Pattaya, Bangkok.

Happy buying.

Think I would rather wait until they replace the oil pump to a more reliable design to avoid any issues after reading the bulletins about the ten minute oil drain warning

More than likely a lot of half changed oil services going on out there to prevent comebacks on the dealerships

I tend to agree. Too little margin for error and I doubt the mechanics are equipped with a stopwatch or timer.. 9.5 minutes on the dot!

This is somewhat confusing ...everybody and his dog knows of the oil drain time limit on the 3.2 5 pot.  They handed the car back to you with the oil light illuminated....

As your Ford should still be under warranty ... 3.2L hasn't bern out 3 years has it ...that was done at a Ford dealership.....

Hi

Yes it was done at the ford dealer I purchased it from in BKK..very big one here.

The light was not constanlty on more like going on and off when I started the car in the dealership.. Not big issue they sorted it out.... Still a great car just something to know about..

The 2.2 doesnt have this issue as far as I know from a friend who works for Mazda back home....

We had a 2.2WT 2WD since beginning 2013 and done over 32k km in it so far.

Nice ride for a truck, the 2.2 is okay for us since we don't haul water melons or pineapples, ha-ha.

A bit too big for us living in Pattaya, parking in cramped spaces is a bitch but we only own one 4 wheeler in the family and will keep it that way. Handy when the roads around Pattaya floods and we always came home high and dry.

Other car/suv drivers gives us space out on the roads, not so much in our old Honda City. Enjoy driving the WT out on the highways, sitting high but it's no racer but will still do +140 on the tollways all day long or even more if wanted, enough for me. I had it on 170 indicated once and it felt stable enough.

Apparently my wife had the whole instrument cluster changed on warranty when I was overseas working for 2 month as part of it was failing. This was done without drama by Ford Pattaya, they wanted to send the old cluster to the factory as they had never seen that one before.

Changed the battery early this year as I could fell the old one was sometimes hesitating when starting the engine. The battery guys told us the one original fitted is too small so we got one with much more capacity.

The truck now at over 3.5 years old still looks very good when I bother to wax it which is not very often and certainly not by myself, LOL, it's a truck for Christ sake, not a show case Bimmer so I don't mind/care it looks dirty most of the time.

We have a late 2015 3.2 wildtrack and a 2015 3.2 T+ Everest. Love the pair of them. Wife tends to stick to the Ev. I do like the ranger. Lighter than the Ev so it does go well.

No mechanical issues, good service back up. Only hitch with the Everest was the "scrap if dropped" sticker on the prop shaft came half off. Makes an awful racket as it bangs against the silencer box. Its a known issue and only took a minute to pull it off.

Just out of interest, seeing lots more Everest on the road these days, getting quite popular. A ton of rangers too.

Same here. 3 Rangers in my row and one round the corner. Most popular vehicle in the area.

Honestly, I think Thailand pickup buyers are fortunate to have an excellent choice of brands. All the Thai built pickups are dependable and the vast majority of buyers are happy with their trucks. It is astounding that all have improved greatly over just the past couple of years. Clean diesels, much more power and improved fuel economy. Some years back, I would have never considered buying a rattling Isuzu. When I was working for a Thai company, they bought me a new Isuzu. I hated that thing with a passion. Now I have a 2015 Isuzu V-Cross that I am extremely happy with. All the brands have been greatly improved. Maybe Ford made this possible. Unlike many people, I have absolutely no brand loyalty. I bought what I liked the best.  When I was shopping I thought Mazda gave the most bang for the baht. I simply didn't like the looks. My wife was a Toyota lemming. I did deal on a Toyota but he who pays the piper calls the tune. I chose the Isuzu. The wife wanted a fancy small engined two wheel drive. I wanted a bigger engine and four wheel drive. That's what I bought.

ADDED - I also have a Ford focus. It seldom got driven because at that time my wife preferred driving the old Nissan pickup. Since buying the Isuzu, she has been driving the Ford. She thinks the Isuzu is too big.

Yes the Rangers are sure selling well now, there is about 6 of them in our village now, all WT's, mostly in the 2.2 version.

Brand loyalty? No way, I always buys whatever rock my boat.

Will likely keep our WT perhaps 3 years more and will see what is best at that time, might get a SUV next time, no sure yet.

^Just being sarcastic.

Quite liked them until I drove one last week.  Thought the same about the Pajero until the transmission failed on the test drive.

There is an issue with transmissions in both Focus and Fiesta and other models are being inspected, and presently there is a consumer report about Ford's claims.

Oil change must not take longer than 10 minutes or the pump will not 'prime'...Something like that.

If that happens you will trash the crank bearings....:(

  • 1 month later...

Bought a 3.2 Wildtrak a month ago. It is the first truck I have bought and I tested the Toyota as well. I am finding it very comfortable having covered about 2000km. Longest day was Chiang rai to Pai in 6 hours with no issues. Seats are comfortable and the equipment level is high. Has a few things I haven't come across before. Lane warning and collision warning has proved very useful.

Only downside is that ford haven't yet sorted out a licence for the Asian sat Nav, but the link to my iPhone is flawless so I just use that. So far it hasn't skipped a beat. Only thing I don't like is the Wildtrak only comes with the half leather seats which have black/orange cloth.... I hate orange.

The range does does have its faults though. If you want a 4x4 with leather, there isn't one. And optioning it takes for ever. The one below the Wildtrak (XRT I think) has cloth seats and no roll bar so you can't load over the cab. I actually wanted that one with the steel roll bar but was told no. Then they have a special edition with leather seats and lots of extras that make it look perfect for a bit of off reading with the roll bar.... but it's 2 wheel drive aarrgghh.

So so I just went for top of range with a deal they would give me 50% off on extras. So I went for everything I could think of.

Loving it.

I have a wild track 3.2 auto, it's one year old with 60km on the clock (I used it for work), its had three problems

1. An oil seal which is reported by someone else on the thread, this was done under warranty (3 years or 100km)
2. One I stopped at a shopping mall, when I came back the engine would not turnover to begin with, over the next few days it happened more and more and eventually Ford took it away, they reset the system and it's been alright since, this made we nervous, as I don't think it was a software problem
3. Just recently and it's happened 3 times the tickover becomes erratic and the engine cuts out. When I took it to Ford they said they could not find a problem, but reset the system (I don't believe they did anything), so I'm expecting further problems

My experience so far has not been good and doubt if I would buy any Ford again.

With kind regards

Colin

Sounds like a 'software' glitch which will probably show up again. As for the oil seal, seems it is a common problem which will also probably show up again if they have not fitted a new design or different seal material ...

Am just thinking out loud....This oil seal thingy...My Pontiac V8 had this as the rear oil seal...

rope seal.jpg

Yes, rope...Rope impregnated with oily goooo. The block and cap had a groove, you forced the rope in the groove, then used a roller to spread it snug and near flush in both parts, then trimmed the ends with a box cutter. Though I did have my own way of installing it...

That rope never leaked, even after heavy hp mods. I recently read you can now buy a conventional type seal for this engine.. :offtopic2:
