AIS Fibre modem/router in bridged mode

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have AIS fibre with the HG180 modem/router.

I want to connect and use my Asus RT-AC87U as router, leaving the HG180 as modem only. I have read the manual of the HG180, and it is mentioned that under Basic Setup->Wan, you can set the modem to bridge mode - but that seems to have been disabled in my HG180, as I can only choose Lan and Wlan.

Any way to get this thing in bridge mode?

I have been searching the forum and can see that someone mentions they have it in bridge mode, so I guess it should be possible.

I have my 87u in bridge mode with my 3bb fiber modem. Dont ask me how I done it. I made a post about it on here. Perhaps by searching you'll find it.

Well, it's running ok as it is, but I have read that keeping DHCP and NAT enabled on the modem/router, can cause problems. It doesn't seem I can disable NAT on the modem.

The Asus configures itself nicely, using the setup wizard that appears at first connection - I'm just trying to keep the connections simple and avoid problems in the future.

I have FTTH from TOT with their supplied modem in bridge mode. It could only be done by the network centre, not by configuring the modem/ONT alone.

Perhaps AIS Fibre is the same? Give them a call. In my case it only took TOT a few minutes to make the switch.

Not sure but that looks like a VDSL2 modem? (which interfaces to fiber)

I think you'll have to create a new WAN configuration, enable it, then use your PPPoE credentials on your Asus.

You may want to contact AIS?

I Called them up yesterday, was told she would call me back in a few hours. Called again this morning to hear what happened... And I was told to wait again... That's what made me ask here instead.

I will try and give them one more call tomorrow, but the links supplied above doesn't look promising.

Just had a thorough read of one of the existing AIS threads. awnfibre/fibre@dm!n as user/pass login, apparently opens up for a few extra options.

Not sure how comfortable you are noodling around but do read up on using two devices, one in bridge mode generally.

Then Google "AIS HG180" with/without "words like "bridge" and "port forward".

Or just be persistent with AIS, and let them know exactly what device you have, and what you want to do, keep it simple. "How do I set up my HG180 in Bridge Mode"?

I assume you have your AIS account log-iin credentials? (Username is your account number , maybe 10 digits beginning with 88? No clue on the password? I can't find mine; maybe it's the AIS mobile number? or the Thai/passport ID number?) You'll need these in your Asus router as that device will perform the necessary PPPoE activity.

I'm very comfortable "noodling" around, I don't mind trying my way around.

I have the user/pass. The guy who installed it, wrote it on the gateway box - but something is off. The router detects the Internet connection by itself - it even puts in the PPPoE user/pass info. I get Wan IP and DNS in the router - everything looks to be running, but no connection. In the browser this site open up on occasion: http://network.ais.co.th which says that the password is incorrect... I'm a bit lost at that point. I will try and give AIS a call again, but it seems they are not interested in assisting with bridging the gateway.

So what have you done so far?

I think you'll need to: { I recommend connecting a PC via an ethernet cable to each device }

1.) Create, save and enable a NEW WAN interface in the HG180, maybe under Basic, WAN, choose Connection Type as Bridged. Save that configuration and activate it.

2.) In your Asus RT-AC87U go into Advanced Settings, WAN, Choose PPPoE for Connection Type. enter your AIS username and password, save and activate that configuration.

3.) Turn everything off

4.) Turn on the HG180, turn on the Asus.

Been through what you suggest, I love end up with below message in my browser, when trying to access the Internet

I guess I will have to keep calling AIS and have them do it. Another member had that done, and it worked for him.

You are right, it is from my iPhone... and right again, the password was incorrect ;)

It's sorted now, I have posted the "story" in another thread...

I had a similar problem. I asked AIS to give me the info in order to connect from my Asus AC68, the only info I got was a password (which was incorrect).

To connect to AIS Fiberhome:

It is rather easy with the ASUS AC68,  you need first to select WAN - DSL VDSL -> PPPOE

Enter your PPP Username (needed) and password (not sure it is really needed)

Then to be authenticated you need to enter your AIS Fiberhome Router MAC Address (on the AC68 it is at the bottom of the page as SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FROM ISP) .

Thee only way to set an AIS fibre router to bridge mode is to call the contact centre on 1185 and ask them to do it.  There is no user configurable option that will work.  If people merely plug in and use their own routers they are basically adding either a wifi AP or, if using router mode, will end up with a double NAT situation.
