Just noticed a large soft lump, about half a tennis ball size has appeared on my elbow. Underneath on the bone it is a little sore.

I live up country and will be going to Pattaya in about 3 weeks.

Is it something important I should see a dr about straight away, or can it wait till I get to a Pattaya hospital?

Due to the size that you describe and that you have just noticed it, I would suggest that it some sort of insect bite or sting.

Try getting your hands on some Piriton and see if that does the trick. If no difference in 3 days it is time to drag your backside to the nearest medical facility.

Doesn't feel like a bite or sting, but I have had this rash from under my armpit right down my bicep to the to the front of the elbow joint, and it won't go away.

I was thinking I may have put on a shirt with one of those fury caterpillars inside the shirt and got the rash from that, but the elbow...don't know.

Why I wanted to know if I could wait is that I had a similar lump, about a year ago, on my wrist, and the dr in Aus said you have to be a bit careful cutting these out to make sure you didn't cut tendons etc.

A friend of mine had the exact same, turned out to be gout

Did it look like this?

The rash is hot, but the elbow doesn't really hurt.

Thought gout was painful?

I had an identical thing, no real pain etc, went to docs for xrays etc and no broken bones etc, a cyst, fluid build up from a hit. I was scheduled to see a specialist  in 10 days but didnt go, as it went down. you probably bumped it getting something out of the car and didn't even realize.

Yeah you could be right and the rash could be from one of those furry caterpillars.

I'll give it a couple more days without beer etc and see what happens.

Could be many things:

inflammation from insect bite

injury you weren't aware of at the time

gout

bursitis

None of these are an emergency. The only thing to watch out for is that there is not an increase in the size of the red area - if it starts to increase in size then cellulitis is a concern and see a doctor quickly. Otherwise should be OK to wait a bit, see if it subsides on its own, if not see doctor when back in Pattaya or passing through a large city.

Thanks again.

I got some antifungal cream and have been putting it on the rash 2 times a day and it seems to be going.

I swim every day and think I've found my cause of elbow problem. Lately I have increased my pool exercises to include balancing on the side of the pool with my elbows and stationary bicycling. Soon as I did that today, I thought, ahaa that could be the cause of the elbow prob. Not red, just white.

Panicking for nothing.

I had Bursitis in exactly the same place on my elbow about 14 years ago, when I first moved to Thailand.  The doctor 'lanced' it to empty the fluid out, but it kept coming back.

Finally, I found the best way to stop it returning was to wear a tight athletic bandage that covered my elbow.

That was all fine until a hot day in Phuket and I was in the local McDonalds.  My arm was overheating from the tight bandage and I quickly took it off.

I had about 3 seconds of relief before the constricted blood in my arm moved rapidly to my brain and I fell down in a dead faint!!

Luckily, I recovered after a few minutes, aided by my GF vigourously slapping my face...

Goodness...that was a bad experience, I think I had one of those experiences, a long time ago, with a too tight condom....so the gf saved your life, hope you rewarded her with a lifetime of tl@c.
