Wondering if one of you car nuts have any input on this.

6am this morning, pulling away from traffic lights, heard a bang, squealing from under the hood, and ever decreasing power, until I almost ground to a halt. Popped the hood and took a quick look,  & quickly exhausted my vast engine maintenance knowledge after checking the belts weren't broken!

Anyhoo, got it towed to my local Ford dealership who, to my dismay informed me that the 'bang' I heard, was in fact the turbo exploding

This is a 3.5 year old Ford Ranger 2.2, with 130K km, and routinely serviced by Ford. Is this a typical failure at this kind of mileage?

I'm just curious, not like it's something that by Saturday, and ฿40K, Ford can't fix!

Now I'm going for a nap and a quiet sob

Seems you have been a bit unlucky...A Turbo relies on a good lubrication product and heat dissipation, that's why your handbook 'should' state that after a long-ish run at speed the ride must idle for a specified time to get rid of the heat, if this not done then over time the turbo may/will fail..

3.5 years / 130,000 km is pretty poor life for a turbo.  Turbos usually do not fail with a bang unless something unusual happens.

Some newer turbos (particularly those with water cooling) no longer specify cool down periods.  Hard use immediately after start up or before shut down is certainly not good.  Gentle starts and stops will definitely help turbo bearings and seals survive longer.

Not normal IMHO.

I'd be pretty annoyed if one let go that early on. Our old DMax was on the original turbo when we sold it with 450,000km on it and uncles done at least another 30,000km since then in it without issue.

Current vehicle is a BT50 3.2 with 150,000k and no issues thus far apart from a know problem with a coolant hose and burst intercooler hose which were replaced.

Turbo should not fail so early. I'd suggest you speak with Ford and at the very least haggle a bit and also ensure they get any bits out of the intercooler piping if the compressor wheel let go. You're in for a world of additional hurt if there's bits left behind.

Thanks Guys.

Now my technical knowledge of all this is so minimal I couldn't even intelligently ask questions in English, let alone my Thai.

Are there questions, clarifications about the work that I need to ask? "Bits, piping, intercoolers, world of hurt" all bad things I think

Hope it just ain't the waste gate thingy failed (the BANG)....If the turbo is shot then you will hear a constant noise....

Must add I don't know much about turbo's, only basic stuff...:P

For ANY car the kilos seems low for a modern day turbo failure.....

Having worked with Ford on & off for over 40 years their main focus was always DC over QC.....But, my last actual hands on Ford inside industry was about 10 years ago but nothing had/has changed over the previous 40+ years...

They are more numbers driven.....

That being said - ALL manufacturers have failures before their time regardless of previous track record....

Check for possible comsumer alerts or TSBs for your equipment....Bear in mind TSBs do not imply warranty coverage - but may reveal hidden concessions & cost coverage for the dealer for (inside/unpublished/hidden) problems.....Especially if they're allowed to charge it back to the part's manufacturer (they yield & hold the hammer over them VERY efficiently).....

Do your due diligence, it may pay off.....

My 2001 Ford Ranger is still plodding along with 340,xxx km on the clock. I have replaced the radiator, shock absorbers all round, batteries and tyres and had the cylinder head and water pump replaced last year. It is reliable and a bit rattley at start up but just keeps on going.

If I had the money I would buy another if I still had the need for a pickup, but I wouldn't really as we have no real need for a pickup any more

Unfortunate happenstance in a relatively low-mileage truck and not common. Since it is out of warranty, I doubt there's any value in haggling much with Ford but it may be a good idea to state the dealership where it's getting sorted since Ford's local service and abilities varies greatly by locale. A forum member may have valid repair experience for that Ford branch.

Well this is the gift that keeps  on giving.

So i get a call this morning at 9am....Good news turbo received and will be finished by noon....By 2pm got a call, good news, turbo done, bad news, another customer backed into your truck!

I need a drink!

Keys to extending turbo life:

Use a high quality synthetic motor oil.

Prior to turning off ignition allow engine to idle for 2 minutes while in Park to cool turbo.

No, I'm with you that stuff happens, and not really worth haggling, I just want it fixed at this point.

Up to the point when another customer backed into my truck I was really happy with the service, Resolution of the dented truck is yest to be determined!!

For reference this was Sahachai Ford in Khon Kaen

Interesting. Did you ask the mechanic how often they see this?

We had one go out in a Hyundai H2 at about the same mileage and they told us it was normal. This surprised me, to say the least. Had to tow the vehicle to BKK! As I recall it was about 22K THB to replace the turbo in the Hyundai H2.

Also just curious any idea how when they started using the 2.2 in the Ranger?

Anyway, it's interesting to see how the latest "truck of the year winner" holds up after a couple hundred thousand kilometers..;)

The 2.2 engine was available from the first day they were in showrooms (jan 2012),the 3.2 engine was not

We ordered a Wildtrack 2x4 in Jan 2012 and were told delivery would be in April, ended up upgrading to a 4x4 so we

could get delivery in September

From my experience ford are good for normal servicing but if anything out of the normal goes wrong be prepared

for hassles. One of the problems we had was with the auto trans, it took them 11 extended stays in their workshop

over a month in total time, 18 months and 17000klm before they fixed the problem even though i told them by checking

ford owners web sites at about the third visit (3 months) it was the valve body, which they eventually replaced after 18 months which

fixed the problem

We have had other problems and each time we had to wait extended periods for the parts even though they say

all parts are  24 hr delivery on their web site

Nice to look at and drive but i will never buy another ford in Thailand

That's why I bought a Toyota....Never owned a Toyota before, but when it came to reliability and LOS....Was my only option...

Toyota will probably be my Choice of vehicle the next time we by a new one, had a toyota here before the Ford

and their warranty, service and spare parts supply was excellent, they could certainly teach ford a few things about customer

care and service in my opinion
