My girlfriend is coming to visit me in England in a couple of weeks. Today she said she needs a document from her work. Something about permission to travel. Without it, if she had an accident over here and died her family would get no insurance payout. She says that her work have told her that there isn't time to arrange the document and that she can come but she will have to keep her trip a secret from everyone she knows apart from her family. This sounds a bit strange. Is anyone aware of what she is talking about please?

I am aware that Thai government employees have to get permission to travel overseas to retain their government insurance cover. This is very similar to what you describe.

Thanks for your reply. She's a school teacher. Presumably that is covered by government employees?

Yes, My partner is a government teacher in a college and has to get permission for insurance purposes. Usually takes about a week as it is a head office function in Bangkok and requires several signatures and stamps. The document looks good though as a supporting document in the UK visa application process.

She's not coming for 2 weeks. Seems odd that she says she has been told she can't get one in time to travel. And she's says she can come without it, but can't tell anyone. Surely she is allowed to travel, if I arrange her insurance. Just that she wouldn't get a Thai Government payout if something unexpected did happen?

There is no requirement for visitors to the UK to have any health or other insurance at all.

It is advisable, though.  Other than initial treatment in A&E and some other exceptions, any NHS treatment your girlfriend receives will be charged for at 150% of cost. Any subsequent UK visa application in any category will be refused until the bill has been paid.

As for the requirements of her employer, I can't help, sorry. Best to ask them.

School holidays start tomorrow so maybe the head office staff are away. It is a good idea for her to arrange independent insurance anyway which in probability will give higher payouts.
