Money changers

Featured Replies

Hi, Is there much difference with the money changers exchange rates? Staying in Old City.

Just check their posted rates...go with the best combination of convenience and rate

Just checked four different banks and their buying rates for $50-$100 US bills are 34.59 to 34.67 baht per dollar.  On exchanging $100.00, then, the difference would be 8 baht.  In other words, no, there isn't any significant difference (hardly worth walking too far for an extra 8 baht) unless you're exchanging a whole lot of money.

If you are changing a lot of money try SK Money Exchange on the road behind Anusarn Market and Kalare Night Bazaar. You can call ahead to see what time of day the best exchange rates are (based on live trading) for the currency you want to exchange. Bring your original passport.

Banks may be similar/close but money changers are not, smaller ones and hotels can vary substantially.

With the obvious caveat that hotels give lousy rates, there is no more than a baht difference between the worst bank rate and the best exchange booth. So 10 Baht per $100. So it only becomes even remotely worth shopping around if you are changing $500-$1,000.

One baht difference means 10 baht per $100?

If the difference is one baht per dollar, wouldnt $100 be a 100 Baht difference ?

Super rich at Loi Kroh...

Agree with Super Rich, always seems to have the best rate and over the course of a holiday with a number of transactions it equates to more than a beer or two.

There are two Superrich locations in Chiang Mai (displayed on their website as Superrich 1 and Superrich 2).  One is on Loi Kroh Rd and the other is on Ratchawithi Rd, directly across the street from the UN Irish Pub.  Same chain, same great rates.

And yes, they normally have the best rate in town.

Opals currency exchanges and its a case of beer Tesco/Lotus

Reminds me of my hometown where a few people would drive 6-7 miles across town to go to a gas station selling gasoline at 2 cents a gallon cheaper.  They filled up their 15-gallon tanks and saved a whopping 30 cents (not thinking, of course, that they actually lost money as the extra 10 miles used up gasoline that cost them more than a dollar).  But to each his own (unless you're cashing in a rather large sum of foreign currency, it generally ain't worth the bother).
