BANGKOK: -- Former prime minister Ms Yingluck Shinawatra said she has received official notification demanding 35 billion baht compensation but said she would use all legal channels to fight what she described is illegitimate order and unfair practice.

 

Ms Yingluck made the comment as she appeared at the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders for the fifth hearing of testimony by defending witnesses.

 

Wearing in black and with tearful eyes, the former prime minister said nobody could understand her position if they did not get such illegitimate order and unfair practice.

 

She said she would not make further comments as now the country is still in the mourning atmosphere.

 

But she insisted she would resort to all legal channels to fight and would give a press conference in due process and time.

Thailand's ousted prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra said the military junta that overthrew her has ordered her assets seized and fined her THB35 billion baht over a rice subsidy scheme critics say hemorrhaged billions of dollars.

 

The scheme, which paid farmers above market rates for their rice, was a flagship policy of Yingluck's administration and helped sweep her to office in a 2011 general election.

 

After her 2014 overthrow, Yingluck was charged with criminal negligence over the rice subsidy scheme and is now fighting the charges in court.

I am all for charges being pressed against anyone where there is a reasonable suspicion of illegal / criminal activity whether some people are alienated or not. The suspect should of course be given legal representation and a transparent, fair trial, heard by impartial judge(s).

However if that is the case here, then I am the president of England.

So.....if this is not a witch hunt and marks some kind of political accountability does it mean that all corrupt politicians and army personnel guilty of lining their own pockets at tax payers expense will have to pay similar compensation ? Or is this going to be selective accountability ?

Fact is ......if it's a good thing then it should be applied to all regardless of political affiliation or military rank.

I am not against the aims of the rice pledging scheme to help the lives of the poor farmers

but this was done in such a simplistic and corrupt manor it was doomed to failure from the

start and she should bear responsibility as she was head of the program. As the families

vast wealth appears to be from corrupt transactions and business deals I have no issues

with confiscating it. Of course I would like a full and proper forensic accountants report

on the corruption. How the program failed the farmers and who really got the money.

No they are about right. 5% is spent on Issan area. You see the dichotomy facing Thailand. A some stage that buffalo is going to stand up for itself. An outcome to this Yingluck saga is she becomes a martyr or develops into Aung San Suu Kyi. Hard times ahead.

There is NO check or balance for the Junta.  They will never be held accountable for anything do ever in Thailand.  It is not fair that her money is seized by such people.  You are just transferring her money to them.  What is the point ?  How does that help you ?
