Keeping up with all the new technology

thaipod

Recommended Posts

Just looking around the house with all the gadgets between family members. I.m starting to regret having all this new tech stuff , it's wearing me down, having to check all the devices and keep up with the messages and new apps etc flying in . Everyday having to check and moving between smart phones, smart TV, ipads, the laptop, the car with all the new gadgets and reading the kindle. Think we all need to come down to earth again or better turn back the clock.

How does it affect you?

I don't watch TV, don't even have "farang" satellite.

Still read books, the ones with paper pages.

My phone is always off, turn it only when I leave the house.  It's a "smart phone" circa 2009 or 10.  I don't have internet on it, just 12Call credit, so I'm not one of those people walking around glued to the screen.

I do use the computer a lot.  Email, entertainment, reading/news, internet banking, weather, booking plane tickets, hotels, cars, etc., but I've never felt the urge or need to get into tablets or the latest phone.

When I was working,  I had a Blackberry blowing up all the time, so I appreciate NOT having one now.

Here's a question for you.  Based on the above outline, how old would you say I am?

55 Jay?

It's indeed annoying when you go out with a few Thais and all update their facebook status. I'm happy that I grew up without computers, mobile phones, and stupid games.

I needed a new phone, bought a Samsung Android but I only use a few functions of it.

Being online can be addictive, I just got our son now 18 of the screen playing war games and other stupid stuff. Little kids at school need eye glasses just because their parents don't understand that staring at a tiny monitor for many hours every day affects the eyesight in a very negative way.

In addition seem Thais not to understand that the invisible waves, especially when the battery is empty are very dangerous for the brain and can cause cancer.

Wherever you look online, even a word in any search machine leads kids to Xhamster, a porn web page that seems to have trillions of members. Then you can find some nasty child stuff on Youtube,

 and delete it.

Too many people stopped reading books which is really a good exercise for the brain. You can find all sorts of books for free in PDF format.

I went through many years of learning how to deal with computer problems because all shops put copies and viruses on your machine, even when you buy a new one.

I have to admit that I wrote way too many posts on this forum and answered too many questions of people I don't even know.

I started to use more time for me away from PC's and notebooks. But I'm a grown man and I can't even imagine how the Internet will educate our youth in the future.

It's already visible at all places you visit. People who're not far away from each other prefer to send a text message, of course with a cartoon character attached. Like we wouldn't already have too many cartoon characters in form of politicians, teachers, cops and other superficial people.

What? You don't have a LINE account, what's wrong with you? To be honest, I only use facebook to find all friends, but I started to hate all these websites that take peoples' time away, all the adverbs that suggest to buy the newest XXX phone because it's got a XXX graphics card and a fruck yourself processor?

I feel sorry for kids in Thailand. They have to go to school way too early when they should be at home with their parents, not all day long at school. Most of them receive a nice phone as it's also a status symbol. Look, my new IPhone......

I might give my Android to my son and use my old just phone thingy as that's all I want from a phone. My old Samsung all in a sudden started working again and it's simple and good enough. A cam, a recorder, a calculator is enough. I don't want to check/write my e -mails on a phone.

But hell no, I had to get a micro 3 G card that doesn't fit into my old phone. Well, have to find a way to keep my number. It took two weeks to get this done. Micro, or Bullshit?

OP, your topic is really scary. More and more people with psychological problems and disorders will be/is the result of not speaking to each other anymore. It's easier to type something than to speak to somebody.

Cyberworld, you make our lives so much easier. But sometimes also our bank account empty.

You can read about people who killed others just because they saw that their loved one chatted with somebody else on facebook. Isn't that totally sick?

I'll copy all my photos from my facebook page and delete it. They always find ways to send you some freaking stuff to your e-mail account. i don't want to know all the peoples' birthday, or if somebody's mood has changed.

Enjoy your facebook adventures, I prefer a game of chess. :jap:

Its called progress, although I am seeing the death of meaningful conversation. My teenage son invited his buddy over the other night, and as I walked past his bedroom, it was totally silent, so I snuck a look. They were both staring at their smartphone screens, earphones in, oblivious of each other. Might as well have Skyped, would've been much easier.

In a way, I'm glad that being in my 60s, I won't be around when the sheet hits the fan, and it will!

Your dad predicted the same thing...

Its not that hard to keep up with technology, its what makes it easy to live here and stay in contact with my family in my home country.

I have technology that helps me make money in Thailand.

Its like Darwin said.. evolve or die.

But I get it this is old guys forum and not many are that into tech, I am and it has hugely improved my life.

Because i adapted to computers early I had a head-start to all of my age group who never did. It paid of a lot.

That being said.. you don't have to respond to every message you get. I don't do facebook.. its a choice. I would say tech has saved me money and time.

I too, am hi-tech savvy, in fact I'm what they now call a digital nomad, and while I agree that technology is very useful, we are moving away from direct personal contact and I wonder where that will end.

Just to add.. what helped me a lot (im a geography challenged idiot and living in Thailand has not made it any better) is google maps.

Now I just ad stars on the map where I went.. I go to websites and copy locations of stores.. then put my smartphone in the car on a ram mount (or on the bike on a rammount) and get where I need to go.

It works better then normal gps because its easier to add places and no need to convert coordinates. I drove to a fishing-spot 3 hours from my home without problems because i copied the google map link. I had a gps next to it .. but the gps had to have the coordinates converted from google maps and was off by a few hundred meters.

I am a digital nomad too.. I still have enough personal contact. I really don't see messages as a replacement of personal contact but an addition. My parents call me every 2 days by skype... just imagine how hard it would have been 10 years ago to do that.

I absolutely love ebay and online shopping.. we can get stuff cheaper and things we never could get before in Thailand. People moaning about improvements are just not taking everything in account.

You must have mixed me up with someone my router is never turned off. Just rebooted once in a while. I got a HD connected to the router to stream movies to my mediabox on the TV.. so its stupid to turn of a router.

Besides.. the phone would still use internet.

@LostinIssan - I do have Line on my phone.  Amending my posted outline, I will turn my phone on at home (connected to the Wifi) only if my wife goes out shopping on her own or with friends or, the rare event I need to accept an OTP for 3rd party internet banking transaction.  Once those conditions are done, switch the phone off, toss it on the shelf behind my desk again.

I've always been a bit slow to adopt new tech. Once I left work, not having to keep up with trends, I stagnated because my life is much simpler now.  I'm still using Win7, never had 8, 8.1 or Win10, at least not yet.  My laptop still running the original Win Vista it came with.  I'm still on MS Office 2003 , all my finances are on Excel '03 spreadsheets, compatible with updates and newer version patches, at least for now.

As Robblock suggested above, I acknowledge that my world contracted when I left work.  Moreover, I tend to be a lone-wolf by nature, quite happy with my little routine around the house for days and weeks on end.  However, after the first year or two here, recognized I was sliding into the abyss, and made a concerted effort to develop a social network. I took some effort to re-tune my ability to start and hold a meaningful conversation with other humanoids.   I like to consider myself a reasonable, non-religious centrist about most things in life but many of my mates around here lean right, if not far right, and a few are members of God's Army.  Having the social network is more important to me though, so I try not to upset their delicate apple carts with annoying shit like "facts" n' stuff, and just enjoy having a few beers and a chin wag.

I remember my old man saying the very same thing when VHS video came in refused point blank to have it in the house. Before he passed away he had sat tv, dvd player, smart phone, and a kindle. Change can be challenging but if you don't adapt you will get left behind and in this day and age that's not good. Neighbours don't pop in any more before I left to live here I didn't even know my next door neighbours name probably couldn't have pronounced it anyway. Here at least I get by on my smart phone and android tv box. And the neighbours do pop in still.

To me it's all about balance and personal management.  I love the technology.  Being able to communicate with folks aroutdoor the world real time is actually quite powerful.  Especially smart phones.  I am no longer tied to a computer to do banking and investments. I can answer work emails quickly.  Lots of freedom.

However...... like anything many will abuse it. They become addicted and lose touch with reality.  As many have stated and I have witnessed it as well people have stopped talking to each other. People live face down in their phones.

As for Internet TVs, I love them.  I can watch a movie, NFL, NASCAR, etc.  I do not watch a lot of TV but I have a big one with surround sound and it is relaxing when I do.  I have never been a book reader.  Iam way to hyper to sit long enough. I am an outdoor guy and busy all the time so having technology on the go is fantastic.

It would be a big inconvenience living here without  the internet. I watch NHL, netflix, youtube on line. Taik to my family on Skype. Have FB but rarely on it anymore. Do my banking, check the stocks and the news.Have chromecast now on two TV's. also portable hard drive that has ton of movies. Checking airline prices on line and booking them and hotels. you get my drift. What i do not like is seeing people glued to their phones , walking in front of.you at slow pace and ignoring one and.another  in restaurants. When you go out to eat you need to talk to one another. Taking selfies is another one that gets my goat.

I'm fixing PC's and notebooks for friends, use Skype to call the folks abroad and understand most programs, even how to crack them.

I'm currently using the finest of the finest programs for my job, etc. But I don't appreciate the trend that people stopped talking to each other, send an "I love you heart", but when they meet each other they're too shy to speak.

Whole groups of people go to restaurants with internet no noise can be heard because all are on a particular website, or try a new game.

I only smile when most Thais make a photograph of the food they eat and immediately update their status. I didn't say that technology is wrong, ABS and airbags in cars wouldn't be there without it.

But when kids live in a Cyberworld and start to believe too many things and learning at school stops, then I don't want to know how that will end.

Plenty of young students at high schools here are selling their bodies to be able to buy an iPhone or a similar "quality product."

I didn't say that i hate technology, i just don't want too much of it and use it when I want, not the company that invented the piece of soft- or hardware.

If phones cause cancer is still a point where many doctors aren't keen, but Elektro Smog can't be good for us, right?

Okay, these guys from the article might just make such things up and living near a nuclear power plant must be damn healthy.

Technology yes. But no on little monitors staring zombies who lose track with the real world.

Please go to an internet shop right after school and watch what sort of games the kids are playing.

Yin and Yang. The good and the bad.

"

Computer use can damage the eyes.

Fact: According to the AAO, computer use won't harm the eyes. However, when using a computer for long periods of time, the eyes blink less than normal (like they do when reading or performing other close work). This makes the eyes dry, which may lead to a feeling of eyestrain or fatigue. So encourage your kids to take frequent breaks from Internet surfing or video games."

Some of the older generation will have a problem with smart phones... my mom just can't master it (she is happy playing games on her IPAD) but the smarphone i gave her is too much for her. Dad has no problem with smart phones but does not want to explain it to mom all the time (quite understandable).

Some people will just never get it.. you can't miss what you never known so if you lived good without it no problem not having it.
