Krabi maths teacher stabs school director to death after raise refusal

KRABI: -- A maths teacher at a Krabi school has turned himself in after he fatally stabbed a school director.

 

Sophon Piyathamkhun ,54, was stabbed once in the right side of the chest with a ten inch knife after he refused to give the teacher an increase in salary and an argument broke out, reports Thairath.

 

Ao Nang police went to Krabi hospital Tuesday but the director was already dead. At the school they found a pool of blood next to classrooms.

 

On Tuesday afternoon the teacher Anan Wandarei, 41, turned himself into police at the Ao Nang station where he was interviewed by deputy sergeant Songphun Bunchai.

 

Anan brought along the ten inch knife that he had used in the murder.

 

He told investigators that he had frequently argued with the director about his work schedule. When he was told on Tuesday that his salary would not be increased he decided to stab the director.

 

After that he went home. When he found out the director had died he turned himself in to police, he said.

In the school director's defense, I'm sure he didn't want to forgo buying another Mercedes Benz rather than giving the teacher a raise.  Doesn't justify violence on the part of the teacher, but we all know how school directors in Thailand handle their budgetary priorities.

Most likely due to the argument and not the raise itself...sends a clear message to management(most could not) that people can only handle abuse for so long.

   So, the School director already had a Mercedes Benz and he wanted to buy himself another one instead of giving his teachers a pay rise .

   Was the School director going to sell the older Benz or was he going to keep both of them ?

I think you miss the point, the OP only surmised that the director had a Merc, he was making the point that..........never mind!

    So, his point wasnt based on any actual facts ?

His point was that the Director was being greedy in not giving a pay rise ?

A guy who goes to a meeting with a 10" blade to ask for a payrise clearly won't have enough money for anything.

Just doesn't add up, but it figures. When your numbers up, your numbers up. To bad they couldn't work out the division between them, could have been done in a fraction of the time he'll spend in jail.

I guess you've never had the pleasure of working at a Thai government school and seeing how the directors live, compared to any of the lower or mid-level teachers.  Do you know starting salaries for entry-level teachers are just over minimum wage?  Take off the rose-colored glasses Captain Thailand.

I havent worked in a Thai school .

Directors do usually earn more than teachers , starting salaries are usually quite low as well .

But no one knows how much the teacher was earning or how much more he wanted . 

No one knows how much the director earned or how much profit his school made .

Its unfair to label the director as being greedy , with nothing to back this up .

Maybe the teacher was being greedy in asking for a higher salary that he was worth ?

If the teacher was worth more than his salary, he could go to work in another school that would pay him his worth

It is more than possible that he was being paid what he was worth already.   But of course, as another poster pointed out, we will never know.  These stories only appear in Thai Visa for shock value and possibly for the same reason the original story only appears in the original  source it was published  in, for exactly the same reason.  We never know the reason why we never hear any more.

There is something wrong with this story. The way I understand is teacher have to apply to the  Ministry for an increase in salary it has very little to do with the Director. Teachers are paid by the Ministry and it is a very complicated process to get an increase.

Maybe there was another reason all together for there argument.

The whole thing just doesn't add-up.

Couldn't have been much of a Maths Teacher if he didn't calculate on being subtracted from the School Community and 

Added to the Prison Population for his trouble but at any rate, the Director got the point.

This story would make more sense if the "pay rise" was referring to off-the-books income of some sort rather than the maths teacher's official salary.

 

Either way the whole affair points to prior events failing to be handled properly and is indicative of the "iron rice bowl" status of govt. teachers here. Once in, they are almost impossible to turf out, no matter how unsuitable for the role.

Will be really hard to get higher salary now
