Hi All,

Can anyone with recent experience (pref after 01 Oct) please post an 'idiots guide' for successfully obtaining residence letters and renewing 5 year driving licences for bike and car at the first attempt?

(I hope to make less than 3 trips for the latter this year!)

      Thank you :)

Details were posted some time back... will try and search for later... unless you want to!!!

I seem to remember, it's certain days you can do... When I redid, motor bike,  I had to watch a "safety video" for good hour.. plus do the reaction tests!

A friend got his car and bike license done at same time, it was just a few baht more, to get both...But you have to say so first!

Went to renew my 5 yr license and done the driving part , went inside and failed the colour blind test. Wouldn't give me a license despite me showing my renewed UK one !! The driving part took less than 5 minutes in the grounds of the place . Absolute joke !!

Hi

Don't forget your medical certificate and 2 passport photos. The med cert can be obtained from any of the small doctors around the island .... around 200 - 250 Baht.

Also don't forget to wear long trousers on the day you go - shorts will be rejected.

What does the driving entail?

The whole thing's a mockery as we all drive there and back :)

Med cert for renewals now too?

Thanks for the heads-up.

I take it that (and residency certs too) is per licence ie you cannot photocopy an original doc if you're applying for bike and car renewals?

I might also apply for IDP from home too so that I remain 'legal' in the short term.

Having renewed my home licence at the click of a mouse I find myself again wondering why something so easy is so hard :(

I drove forward between pile of poles for about 20m and stopped at the end, then had to reverse all the way back without hitting them. Then had to park in a bay marked out with poles, which was smaller than my car . Had to point this out to the guy and he adjusted them so the car would fit !! Then 2 minutes driving in a loop over 2 tiny humped bridges and back to start. 10 yr old could do it !!

If you need medical test for 5-year renewal, it's new; since September last year. Residence letter you can obtain from Samui Immigration (for a fee, cannot remember how much, but in 200 to 500 baht range), but if you have a Yellow House Book, they'll accept that. Photos are taken when printing the new Driving License(s), but photocopy (copies, if two DLs) of Passport and House Book (if not Resident Letter). I think it's Monday, Wednesday and Friday – better check with office first – for renewal, and you need to be there early (think it's 8:30am to 9am) and dressed neatly. I always go there some days before and check what I need, and when it's best to come; they are very polite and helpful. As SamuiJimmy said, watched a video (with English subtitles) for an hour, and then colorblind and reaction tests; normally all done before lunch break.

Proof of residence.

Copy passport, copy house paper, two passport photos, THB500.

Did it just over a week ago. Gave me two copies.

When I handed over documents and money, she gave me a ticket number ber and it would take about an hour. There is a coffee shop restaurant outside.

The last time I had one done for the DL at the small doctors surgery in Nathon, he just gave me "a couple of coats of looking at", as we would say where I come from.

The doctor interviewing seem to able to test that from the conversation.

My last two health check certificates states, that...

2014 from Bandon Hospital, health check for DL, which was not needed in 2014 for a 5-year renewal.

(However, I cannot read the "Opinion conclusion" in Thai, so maybe there's something serious wrong, I happily don't know about.:crying:)

Good to know that your mental state, drug abuse is not a problem anymore.

Also that your elefanfantit, syfillis and leprosy has been cured...

But your TBC score  looks little bit high.

Thanks for explanation, but got no idea, never visit doctors, just had to have a piece of paper for authorities – can I sue someone for a non-working TBC-vaccination from my childhood..? – by the way, what happens with our Retirement Status, if one "fails in a medical" test; and when do one "fail"..?

Can DL's be renewed any day or are Tue's and Thu's out?

Do you still have to reach @DVLA by 0830?

How long are Res Certs from imm valid in the eyes of DVLA?

Guess where I'm heading this week!

An ‘Idiots Guide’ to renewing  5 year driving licences:

(See notes at the bottom first!)

Day 1: Immigration:

-          I applied for a ‘Residence Letter’ while doing a normal 90 day report.

-          Only my original passport, written address & 2x photos were required.

-          The cost was THB 500 with no receipt.

-          The above was enough for 2x identical letters for car & bike.

-          I paid a further THB 200 for 2 x Med Certs at a clinic in Naton & had lunch in the 2hr window between applying for and collecting the above. This later proved unnecessary….

Day 2:     DLT, Department of Land Transportation.

-          Arrive before 0830hrs and take a number giving you a place in the queue and wait to be called.

-          Flash your passport as soon as you are called & put it away unless asked (I wasn’t)

-           DLT expect you to arrive with copies of Passport bio page & current extension page (they called it ‘visa’). If applying for Bike and Car you’ll need two copies.

-         DLT will staple a template to the front & ask you to write your name and phone number at the top and sign all of the above papers.

-          Pass the papers back & wait upstairs until 1030hrs.

-          Shortly before 1030hrs the same paperwork is handed out & you are beckoned into a classroom to watch a mandatory video.

-          After the video everyone is tested for colour blindness (random traffic lights), reaction time (brakes) and depth-perception (‘horse-reins’).

-          Upon completion it’s down stairs for Tea & Medals (for non Brits this means you’ve finished :) )

-          Digital Licences are issued on the ground floor while you wait at just under THB 1,100 for the pair.

             Preliminary Notes:

i.                     Licences are valid for FIVE BIRTHDAYS from the date of issue

ii.                   Current licences need to have EXPIRED (!) before you can renew.

iii.                  You can renew up to ONE YEAR after the above but you’re in a position of weakness with insurers if you have an accident. It therefore makes sence to do it just after your current licence expires which gives you SIX YEARS before you need do it again.

iv.                 Applying for residence certificates while doing a 90 day report is self explanatory.

v.                   If renewing after a year a medical certificate is required, as is a retest.

vi.                 I (50’s/ one month after my licences expired) had Med Certs in my possession but they weren’t required. The over 70’s should take them as a precaution but we (wife-Language-We were very specific and asked about 70+/age restrictions) were lead to believe they were only needed after a year.

vii.                Sign everything before you leave home in order to avoid the scrum as 30+ people elbow their way at the available space there! A Pen, Envelope/A4 sleeve, bottle of water and a sweat cloth are advisable too as they’re economical with the fans & even more so with the air con! Wearing trousers etc didn’t help re pers comfort but I was finished by midday & won’t be back until late 2022 :)

viii.              Staff were helpful and accommodating.

ix.                 The ‘Mon/Wed/Fri’ confusion applies to initial licences only. Renewals are processed every day.

x.                   For clarity; If it isn’t mentioned above and you are retired, married & renewing a five year licence YOU DON’T NEED IT!

Correction :   I have changed  DVLA  in orginal post here to :

DLT, means  Department of Land Transportation.

SJ!

The DVLA is an UK agency.

In Thailand it is called DLT, Department of Land Transportation.

I have corrected  that in the above and in pinned link!  People may get confused! :stoner:

Thank you for all for the info posted here,

Please can someone clarify if this is the correct requirement for a first licence for both car and bike:
Passport
2 Copies of Passport bio page & current extension page
2 x ‘Residence Letter’
2 x Passport photo
2 x Medical Certificate

I have a UK driving licence and International Driving Permit, I presume showing them will help? Do they need copies of those as well?

Appreciate any advice.

When I first did mine for bike, that looks correct ^

Yes, do show your UK and IDP at time of applying.

Do ask for the two licenses together it's only a few baht more... You will get two cards...

You may  need to sit through the rather tedious video and reaction tests... (only once)  That's new since my first go around!
