Army ignores Burmese government’s request for information on clashes in Arakan state

 

 

YANGON: -- The Burmese government’s request for information about army operations in a township near the Bangladesh from the army appears to have fallen on the deaf ears, according to The Irrawaddy Online on Tuesday.

 

The operations in Maungdaw township, carried out by the army jointly with border guard police, have entered the fourth week after attacks of border guard posts by suspected Islamic militants in northern Arakan state on October 9.

 

The government sent a list of 13 questions to the army asking for information about reports of killings, looting, arrests and destruction of homes. But there has been no answer from the army.

 

The government has said that five soldiers and at least 33 insurgents have been killed in clashes with a group believed to number about 400 drawn from mostly stateless Rohingya Muslim minority.

 

Diplomats and aid workers quoted by Reuters to have said privately that they were dismayed with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s lack of deeper involvement in the handling of the crisis.

There are many rogue armies in Myanmar. The Kachin state Burmese army do what they want and only follow orders if it suits them. 
Im guessing the same is going on on the other side of Myanmar too. Evil bastards they are too with rapes and murders a regular occurrence. Myanmar may have a democracy but only in certain areas as suits the local armies. 

Strange... the article mixes old colonial-era names (Arakan instead of Rakhine, Burma instead of Myanmar, but Yangon instead of the old Rangoon). I thought that Thai PBS is a government-linked organisation so would use the official (modern) names. I understand the BBC uses the old names in a sort of protest against the former military government, but Thailand is an ASEAN member...
