It's incredible the anti-Russian sentiment that comes out in these threads.

Obviously you think you're superior to Russians. Why?

I live in one of the most Russian areas of Pattaya and have never a problem with them. Sure, their numbers are lower now, but the Thais are suffering because of that and certainly wouldn't be happy about their diminished numbers. Only the anti-Russian Farangs are happy.

Not anti- Russian, I am anti rude, smelly, que jumpers ; 2-3AM loud mouth

drunks.  The ones I have found most guilty of the above just happen

to be Russian.

I'm actually interested in hearing from Russians to explain to me any cultural considerations in my baht bus queue story before. I recognize I was no saint in blocking the jumpers but clearly they thought my reaction to their jumping was bad and their jumping was normal and not worthy of any defensive action. I could understand if I shoved them or something but all I did was block them.

They seem to have returned to my beach in Phuket. Pretty easy to spot, usually fat overweight women in horrible swimsuits....and big paunch men. Had what I thought was four Russians sitting next to us at the Beach Bar last night. Women were hot, and the men very fit and muscular. But their English was good and the Russian sounded different. Concluded they were probably Polish....asked and they were. Nice to see Eastern Europeans for a change. The Chinese are interesting, fascinated by the crabs on the beach, and clothes just not in style.

I've been to Moscow quite a bit, basically if you want to travel on public transport, trains, buses, underground etc, it's first in, best dressed, everyone just piles on, with total disregard for anyone else or any queue. That's how they are, your attempt to engender some western style order would have been completely lost on them as they probably have never experienced it before. Hence the Russian guys over reaction to you.

Thanks. That does make sense and I suppose I sort of guessed that on one level. But now I'm wondering about the ambiguity of this. Westerners in Thailand. Russians in Thailand. Thais also jump queues here (not as bad) but in my experience they get it if you block them and would never react the way that Russian did.

So does it make sense to cave to Russian culture here in Pattaya now that they most certainly do NOT dominate the population here?

Maybe what I'm saying is that even though we're in Thailand, in a social situation here where Russians totally dominate, probably Russian rules apply. Or when westerners totally dominate here, probably western rules apply.

But as I see it now, neither Russians or westerners dominate ... so shouldn't THAI rules apply?

That's not completely  true .

Most Russians see situations,   as a mini power struggles.

some loose gracefully,   some don't.

That one,  the Russian guy did not,    but did not push it,   to far more.

He lost.

There is always a Victor,   excuse the pun

Worked with them for years. :jap:

Jingthing was right to stand his ground, more should do the same.

Yeah, but he could have beat me up and not really looking for that. Maybe he eventually did realize I didn't understand Russian. I wonder if I did, what would be different.

Come  on

You run that risk if you start a confrontation

and you know that.

So don't play the pussy card.

Visited Russia many times, only good experiences. Russians in Pattaya no different. Seen many bad Western Farang though.

People are generally the same the world over. Those who label another countries people, usually have a problem in my experience.

Yeah, I suppose.

I'm kind of on automatic when I see that kind of jumping behavior. I generally try to stop them. It's not always pretty and I don't always succeed.

When there were tons of Russians here I was quite conscious that their behavior had changed mine. With almost everyone jumping the queue it meant if you didn't play the game, you could end up unfairly waiting a very long time.

Someone might want to notify those 'women from there' that there is NO topless or NUDE beaches in Thailand!   The last time I was on the beach in Pattaya, One LARDO woman took off her top?

her boobs were so droopy, she could breastfeed the cockroaches on the sidewalks!

And many I know are coming as usual.

I dont doubt that at all but where we will see the real tail off is January/February. People who book for Christmas mostly do it early and will bite the bullet

Welcome to the forum anyway.

Aside from your condescending reply to this 'newbie' post. It does seem that the Thai visa so called veterans are enjoying a good , full discussion on this.

Thanks for your kind words but have you had a look at his other forum 'contributions' yet? No? I thought not.

Back on topic: there's plenty Russians in and around Pattaya right now. Maybe it is because the Chinese have evaporated and the Russians that have always been here are more noticeable once again... for some who think it's noteworthy.  It's a bit like the casual observation that there are still hundreds of Pattaya baht buses rolling around empty, ballsing up traffic and parking illegally. They never went away of course, it was just that we had all those <deleted>' buses full of Chinese to whine about instead.

We have to blame Ronald Reagan, Mikhail Gorbachev or to whoever you attribute the fall of the Berlin Wall and collapse of the Soviet Union. Prior to that, Russians were inveterate queue'rs due to the rationing and shortages that went along with socialist austerity. A late visitor to the Soviet Union observed it was quite funny to start a queue by getting a couple of mates to stand in line behind you at a shop door. Within a few minutes, several locals would wordlessly tack on behind and look quite lost when the 3 people at the start of the queue simply walked away giggling.

I guess freedom does have its drawbacks.

I drove down Soi Pattaya Park the other day. This used to be "Little Russia" but there was hardly anyone to be seen anywhere, Thai or Russian. Lots of empty or semi-empty shops etc.

We drove in from the airport around 5PM.  No backups at the toll booths, not much traffic on the railway way bypass.  Even the driver was commenting on how light the traffic was.

Not sure what Russian demographic decamped on Pratumnak hillside. Were there lots of relatively cheap shophouse apartment rentals down there? The upmarket Russians with a bit more liquidity acquired condos and houses but they are a (mostly) quiet minority. Lots of empty and semi-empty commercial shophouses all over Pattaya BTW... bright side and dark side.

The weekend after a local holiday (3-day) weekend is typically quieter but you are right, it is generally a lot easier getting around Pattaya these days, especially with the demise of the zero-baht tourists from China.

The only sources of added congestion I've seen the past couple of days are where teams of welders are working on the sidewalk footings for what I assume will be new overhead signage. They usually have a truck with a generator or welding plant parked in the nearside lane.
