Our video this morning shows the arrest of an Israeli man who later admitted to the killing of a compatriot on Wednesday.

 

Simon Nittan, 50 was handcuffed after being dragged out of his house in Bang Bua Thng, Nonthaburi, yesterday.

 

Inside the house cops found the cut up, cement covered body of a man.

 

Police believe it is 63 year old Heliyahu Cohen, a former Israeli policeman who had been missing from a Charoen Sanitwong condo since Wednesday.

 

Relatives of the deceased had filed a missing person's report after his mysterious disappearance midweek.

 

After a grilling from a team of top investigators the suspect admitted to the killing but has yet to give a motive for the execution style murder.

 

His 17 year old son is now helping police with their enquiries to see if he was involved or not.

 

Police found the victim's Yaris car abandoned on the Bang Kruay - Sai Noi Road also in Bang Bua Thong, that is north west of Bangkok.

 

 

The suspect's  Honda CBR was found parked at a PTT gas station six kilometers from the house where the body was found.

 

The suspect said the knife used in the killing was thrown in the trash but this has yet to be recovered by police. 

 

The Israeli Embassy said that the suspect had murdered an Israeli national in Thailand 22 years ago.

 

It was not reported whether he had been arrested for that or done time.

 

Police understand that the suspect and the victim met originally in Khao Sarn Road. On Wednesday it is understood that they met at the PTT gas station then drove to the house in the Yaris.

 

The former cop was then murdered and cut up.

 

The suspect would not confirm or deny that the murder was because of a dispute over money as Thai police believe.

 

Investigations continue with the focus also on the 17 year old son who was not named.

If the reported age (63) of Eli Cohen is correct, it's a different Eli Cohen than the one killing and dismembering his wife in 2004.

Eli Cohen is about as common a name in Israel as James Smith.

There was even a famous hero by the name in the run-up to the Six Day War.  The Syrians executed him as a spy,.  He convinced the Syrians to plant eucalyptus trees to hide the installations from which they would fire down at civilans in the kibbutzim around the Sea of Galilee from the Golan Heights. When Syria attacked Israel a year later in 1967, the IDF simply took aim at every eucalyptus grove looking down from the heights. The rest is history.

The guy they arrested is a career criminal. Was involved in pretty much anything illegal and then some. In 1998 he escaped from custody and made it to Thailand. Here, he was involved in another murder case, related to a drug deal. Was convicted of of assisting to dispose of the body (which got chopped, btw) and was extradited to Israel. That was in 2003-2004. During this prison term he was recruited by the police as state witness/undercover operative and assisted in incriminating others. Things went sour (more demands, trying to double cross the police). Anyway, sentence was cut and he came back here.

 

The victim is NOT the the murderer that chopped his wife back in 2004. Same name, different person.

Indeed. The victim is a retired police officer (or prison guard, according to another report).

I agree.... without opening myself to accusations of racism or Thai bashing, but foreigners seem more likely to properly premeditate their crimes.

The latter (wires crossed). The 2004 murderer of the same name was pardoned after 7-8 years in prison and returned to Israel. Unlikely he would have been permitted back in Thailand under the same name. The victim's family in Israel already complained about the confusion.

The Eli Cohen who killed his wife was 37 in 2004, and would be 49 today. Also, if the picture in the Chiangrai Times article is of the victim, it is definitely not the same Eli Cohen.

You both said it, but you're both wrong … there's no karma going on here! Eli Cohen the perpetrator and Eli Cohen the victim are two entirely different people.

The murder victim was a former Israeli police officer Eliyahu Cohen aged 63. 

Now the father of the suspect's wife wonders what happened to her after the suspect and his son (his own grandson) told him she had been arrested by Lao authorities for narcotics at the Nong Khai -Laos Friendship bridge. When the grandfather inquired the Lao authorities said there was no trace of her.

An Israeli man arrested for allegedly killing his fellow countryman

 

 

BANGKOK: -- An elderly Israeli man was detained by police for questioning after being accused of killing his own fellow countryman and entombing his incapacitated body in the toilet of the suspect’s rented house in Bang Bua Thong district, Nonthaburi province, on Saturday.

 

The suspect was identified as Shimon Biton, 50, who claimed to be a former Israeli policeman like the victim, 50-year old, Eliyahu Cohen.

 

Police investigation stemmed from a complaint from the Israeli embassy in Bangkok on Friday to help trace Eliyahu Cohen who went missing after he was last seen leaving his apartment room at Thanakorn condominium on Charunsanitwong road in Bangplad district on November 9.

 

Crime Suppression Division police immediately launched the investigation by first visiting Thanakorn condominium to check footages of CCTV system and they found Cohen leaving the condominium at about 10 am of November 9 in a grey Toyota Yaris with license plate No Khor Thor 3926.

 

With the bank cooperation, police found several transactions were being done with the victim’s bank account at an ATM at Big C Rattanathibet modern trade store on November 9. They checked the CCTV system at the store and found the suspect, Biton, and his 17-year old son using the victim’s credit card to buy several items for household use which included black plastic bags, mothball, razor blade.

 

The suspect was also seen buying a big luggage from the same store, but there was problem with the credit card when payment was rejected.

 

The CSD police investigating team found out the suspect and his son were staying at a rented house in Bang Bua Thong. Armed with a court’s search warrant, CSD police went to the house on Saturday for a search.

 

When the police entered the house, they were struck by a strong stench of something rotting emitting from the toilet under the staircase. Traces of newly-paved cement were also found.
