Experiencing delays & lock-ups when navigating Yahoo

Recommended Posts

I looking for some insights or possible solutions to a frustrating problem I am having when navigating in Yahoo.  For the last month or so I have encountered daily long delays and 'lock-ups' when I am in Yahoo.  With my rudimentary understanding of computers I think the problem has something to do with the ads that run in the borders.  I came to this conclusion when I noticed that I have more problems if these ads have not fully loaded.  Sometimes input from the keyboard does not register, sometimes the computer just locks up, sometimes I get an 'explorer not responding' message.  At least twenty times a day I must go through Task Manager and quit explorer.  I have a Dell laptop (Inspiron 14, 3000 series) operating on Windows 8.1 Pro, connected via WiFi.  This am the speed was 8.8 Mbps.  What do you think?  Please keep in mind my computer knowledge is basic.  Thanks!

It's almost certainly a browser issue. I assume from your post that you are using Internet Explorer. You can reset IE to default settings by doing the following:

1 - Click Tools (gear icon at top right) and then Internet options

2 - Select Advanced tab

3 - Click Reset

Or if you don't want to do that, you could just install another browser e.g. Google Chrome: https://www.google.com/chrome/

Either of those options should get you browsing Yahoo again.

thedemon - thank you - reset as you instructed.  Will see if there is an improvement.  Now how do I get my tool bars back?

Can you try another browser like Chrome? At least that will confirm whether or not it is a browser issue.

You can easily uninstall Chrome afterwards if you don't want it.

Thanks - worth a try!

If IE is still causing your system to hang you could try a system file check. That will check for corrupted OS files.

Open an elevated command prompt  That is a command prompt but "run as administrator"

Type sfc /scannow

Hit the enter key.

It will take some time to complete (possibly over 1 hour) and should tell you at the end whether it found corrupted files and whether or not it was able to repair them.

Place your cursor at the bottom left of your screen, above the Windows logo and right click. That will bring up a menu.

From that menu select Command Prompt (Admin)

A UAC check will pop up. Answer Yes

Bless your heart and thank you for your patience - Command Prompt (Admin) is not on the menu.  I see nothing on the menu that is in that ballpark.

Yes sorry, should have said ON.

Let us know the outcome.

BTW,  did you try another browser?

thedemon - I haven't yet.  I'm worried about my yahoo email and saved favorites - kind of uncharted waters for me.  You know, I watch the ads that pop up on the right and it almost seems like the source struggles to find ads that relate to Thailand.

Scan complete -  "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.  Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.  For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.  Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios."  ??

Don't worry, that result is not uncommon. The next step is open admin command prompt again and this time type in

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Hit enter

Wait for that to complete. Then reboot the machine.

Now try sfc /scannow again, exactly as before. Hopefully this time it will be successful

Error: 87

The online/cleanup-image/restorehealth option is unknown.

For more information, refer to the help by running the DISM.exe  /?.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

I think you may have missed spaces after "online" and "restorehealth" Maybe not clear because of italics.

Here is the command again. You can select, copy and paste it into the command window to save typing.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

In any case the command is correct.

Performed the 'cleanup' - left with a message "20%".  Rebooted, reran system scan - returned same message - "unable to fix all of them".  Much thanks thedemon.  Things are operating more smoothly.  Cheers!

Yeah can imagine it is tiresome waiting for it to finish.

I should have warned you that DISM is known for displaying 20% for a long time when in fact it is still running. So actually the process didn't finish.

When you can be bothered (before going to bed might be a good time) start the process again and just leave until completion. Then rerun sfc /scannow.

Cheers

thedemon - ok, performed a complete 'cleanup', reboot and system scan which returned clean.  Will see if problems persist - ads do seem to be changing much faster now as well as internet running faster.

Heart felt thanks for your help!  You have been very generous with your time.

You're welcome. Come back if the issue persists & we'll try something else.
