Upgrade from 3BB ADSL to 3BB VDSL

Has anyone got any personal experience upgrading from 3BB's ADSL service to their VDSL service? Any significant downtime during the migration etc. I understand I am obliged to take their router, even if I do not want to use it.

Many thanks

You have to use a suitable router but you dont have to use theirs.

In theory there should be little or no downtime.

You may find that the upgrade is in fact a downgrade, as people have found that the international bandwidth on a 3BB VDSL connection is less than the bandwidth they were previously getting on 3BB ADSL and this has been commented on quite widely here. The advertised rates for VDSL are only guaranteed within Thailand. When questioned, various 3BB employees have warned me about this and so far I have followed their advice.

I've just done switch to VDSL and i took their router initially (1000 baht deposit). It's not that good so i returned it (and i hope to get my 1,000 back) and bought a TP-Link VR400, which seems much better. I initially had problems getting the higher speeds which they said was down to sub standard wiring in my condo. I replaced it and things are fine now 33Mbps to Bangkok and even 20 Mbps to UK sites. There was no down time during the switch, only when they did the new connection, a few minutes.

That's the nice thing about ADSL/VDSL connection you can buy a xDSL router and completely replace the ISP-provided router.  However, with a cable or fiber plan you must use the ISP-provided cable/fiber router as the primarily/core router which is married to their system (kinda like a TV setup box and subscription card) as the primary router and many times it can not be set to true Bridge mode to pass almost total control to your personally bought router.   But the downside to an ADSL connection is your plan is going to be limited to around a 20Mb  and a VDSL plan to around 50Mb; however, for cable/fiber you can go up to 1000Mb (and maybe even 2000Mb) plan.

Thanks for the replies / advice. Will keep an eye on things and perhaps do it next year, as we will be back in the UK for a couple of months anyway for Christmas. Our ADSL link has had to close to 100% uptime in the 3.5 years we have had it (in Phuket), and there is a lot to be said for "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I agree with your adage but eventually you have to make a change as internet speeds gradually increase with other packages to 20/30/50 Mbps.
