Phichit governor warns rice traders not to cheat farmers or face criminal charge

PHICHIT: -- Rice millers, traders and cooperatives in Phichit province have been warned by Governor Veerasak Vichitsaengsri not to cheat rice farmers by using faulty weighing machines or they will face criminal litigation and have their licenses revoked.

Inspectors were sent by an order of the governor to check the weighing machines used at 11 rice trading spots to find out whether they are accurate or being tampered with. Three cases of faulty machines were exposed and each of them was fined 20,000 baht plus criminal proceedings in the court. If the alleged offenders are agricultural institutes, the fine will be doubled to 40,000 baht, according to the governor.

Hom Mali paddy price has gradually increased from 7,000 baht per tonne to 8,000-8,500 baht because the grains have less humidity due to the cold season, said Mr Narong Suktho, present of farm cooperatives in Tapan Hin district.

But cheating Bangkokians by faulty scales is a right thing to do and won't be punished....We have our own scale and check the marketvendors to see that many times we get 10% less. Also they still don't use scales with double gauges so we can see what they give us...Even in Gourmet market Paragon the butchers don't have that so they can cheat you as they like.

Only 3 cases of faulty machines  :cheesy:

Joke of the week all over this country scales are inaccurate, markets shops etc

Only places were they are accurate is the large stores using digital scales.

ok it's not going to solve all the problems but at least it is being publicly recognised that greedy people are ripping off the farmers, I would like to see the political connections exposed so that the whole country can get a true picture of what is going on here

A lot of people are criticle of  the junta government and there is room for that - but as I keep saying - there is no other organisation that possibly  has the influence to break the mold of the embedded endemic and massive corruption in this country.................certain elected governments are at the root of it all and it expands out to such a scale that it will take a very brave man to stand up against it, it will also take a very long time to eradicate

It is a massive problem here and the critics that keep insulting the current PM and government really need to take a long hard look a just exactly what they think will fix this very disfunctional country............it 100% is not an election

slowly but surely the local power bases corrupt officials are being striped away and removed, some say it is political- prove it...I don't agree, a transformation is taking place in Thailand and it is something that has never ever happened before, certain people are being called to account.

the current government are by no means perfect but they are doing one hell of a job routing out the badness ....................... just a pity they cannot continue for the next 10 years

and for those here that label me as a "Junta Lover" I have been very critical when deserved of things that I fundamentally disagree with.

There are only two ways that a country like Thailand can evolve to a true democracy

1. Civil war - and that depends on who comes out on top

2. Someone with great power takes control and with good intentions puts the place on the right path bringing abusers to justice and creating a solid constitution that cannot be  abused or changed - they must also be waiting in the background ready to take action if the abuse starts again.

Maybe in 10-20 years time we will actually see a stable country were the abusers and those that have abused will be long gone

No not even there, butchers in Gourmet market have digital scales but still have to calculate the price manually...they do that behind the counter out of sight.

They refuse to buy those digital scales with a printer inside.

One time i got lucky though, the cashier couldn't read the handwritten pricetag of my meat and read a 1800 for 1500 baht...i kept my mouth shut.

You underestimate their will to keep power, especially when the new junta-crafted constitution will legitimize a military coup.

So there was no price increase due to government efforts but due instead to nature.

But then who could have predicted lower humidity during a cold season? Answer - people in Bangkok.

Yes, we will see a stable country, because nobody will ever be able to investigate the true leaders of the country. As has very clearly been shown, especially in the last year.

The one thing a strong power must do is remove any other power that might challenge their absolute.

America likes large blocks of countries broken up. And the present government favours many small parties over 2 large parties.

There is a reason for that.

from what i can understand the way the system is now there will never need to be another coup. the non democratically elected panel will simply be able to remove the government at any time. not that it would probably be necessary however as this panel chooses who will run in the elections in the first place.

I can agree with you there. Yes they only found 3 faulty scales and having said that they only inspected 11 sites so 3 out of 11 is 27%. And that is only in rice mills in just one province

There does not seem to be any Trading Standards Office or Weights and Measures Department in Thailand, either nationally or provincially which makes checking each individual set of scales virtually impossible.

How many scales in all the markets, shops, supermarkets etc are faulty would be simply guesswork.

It would take many thousands of honest dedicated staff years to check them all and then recheck them periodically. Then you would need a whole new system of courts, punishments and enforcement to deal with the problem.

So does the USA.

How many political parties outside of the Republicans and the Democrats have actually help power in the last 84 years which is the same amount of years that Thailand has had political parties?

What on earth leads you to believe that the army itself is not riddled with "embedded endemic and massive corruption"?

How/why do you think it (and the RTN, RTAF) got to be so massively top heavy with senior officers?

What signs do you see that the issue is being addressed and that they will give up their "Golden Goose"?

Which Thailand are you living in?

(PS This: "and with good intentions" makes you sound like an "operative")

Governors in Thailand the silent minority most times. Do they have a mansion where they hang their hat like the US governors? This guy is worth his salt or sorry rice so to speak. Yes the poor rice farmer is indeed an easy target.

So the only scales around belong to the ricebuying middlemen? And the farmers cannot weigh and film the result and do it again at the ricebuyer?

As the scales of justice are lacking and maybe trust runs to deep by the farmers this problem could become the battle of the scales. I will see your scale and raise you one. Maybe you could even scale back on the sarcasm we are all mates here forgiving understanding compassionate are we not? Your asking a lot of the farmers that they should have scales and mobiles to film everything. Beyond their pay grade. You are not from Cuba or North Korea perchance.

Sure they do have mobiles and also there will be scales around. Maybe they should invest in buying one together? Or just build one with a watertank from 1000 litre on the other side?

Get tired of the poor farmer stories, if they get cheated by scales it's easy to film that and show on youtube. We also get cheated here on the markets but if i betray them i'll never go back. That's why i go to the Makro now by the way. Farmers all love to cheat, so do the shops who won't show a retailprice...Makro doesn't have them .

My friends mother grew mushrooms for wholesale, her buyer didn't pay her for 3 months so now she grows red claw lobsters.

See how easy they can change? And how bad they can trust eachother?

Talk it up I am sure others will get the message. Nothing breeds success more than seeing it in action.
