EU leaders call for halt to Turkey membership talks

BRUSSELS: -- The leaders of the European Parliament’s two largest groups have called for the EU to halt membership talks with Turkey because of its post-coup purges.

“Our message to Turkey is very clear: accession negotiations should be frozen immediately,” said Manfred Weber, the head of the largest faction in the European Parliament, the centre-right European People’s Party.

He was echoed by Gianni Pitella, the leader of the socialist group, the parliament’s second biggest, who said: “We want to freeze the accession talks.”

In the wake of Ankara’s post coup crackdown, the message is human rights and democracy are non-negotiable, if you want to be part of the EU.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said the EU will have to “live with the consequences” – if the decision is taken to stop the talks.

The bloc’s top diplomat, Federica Mogherini, urged caution.

“If the accession talks came to an end I believe we would both find ourselves in a lose lose scenario,” she said.

More than 125,000 people in Turkey have been suspended or dismissed over July’s failed military coup.

Some 36,000 have been arrested and media outlets closed.

Kati Piri, the rapporteur for Turkey at the European Parliament, commented: “Whatever it might happen I think it’s our duty as members of this parliament to speak out when our colleagues are in jail, on 145 of your colleagues are in jail and where 10 thousands of people are affected without any form of legal remedy.”

The EU had promised to speed up Ankara’s EU bid talks in exchange for help in keeping migrants back. But while there’s still cooperation, the fear is it could eventually fall victim to spiralling recriminations.

Just too funny... this clown Erdogan can live with the consequences of trying to take his country back to the middle ages!

The EU is having a tough enough time as it is, it would have zero credibility if it admitted Turkey under this draconian dictator.

The EU should have chosen unilateral EU assistance to Greece in the form of money, supplies and manpower to set up, man and facilitate the flow of law breaking migrants flooding into Greece.

Merkel decided to dance with the devil and try and cut a deal.

Erdogan has already spelled out the consequences. The unleashing of the rest of the migrants currently in Turkey.

Great timing by the EU with upcoming elections.

If I did not know any better, I would quickly come to the conclusion that the EU was determined to commit suicide.

Adhesion of Turkey, even without Erdogan, is a suicidal dream of technocrats who lost touch with reality.

The EU has already lost UK.

Should Turkey join, you would see countries like France (that is already today on the brink of electing openly xenophobic and separatist candidates) or Finland... start leaving the same way

Simply the end of the EU

It is frightening to see how these bureaucrats can't see further than numbers. The EU project needs some basic human homogeneity. It's not just about summing GDP's and  workforce. People need to feel some real sense of belonging.

Including Turkey - except in wishful thinking utopias - would definitely ruin an already fragile balance and disintegrate the Union.

Now, put Erdogan on top of that

What's next? calls to Putin? (the populated area of Russia is also on the European continent, after all)

There was never any chance of Turkey being admitted. Yet another Brexiteer lie.

It was all a matter of diplomacy. Keep Turkey on side to assist with the refugee issue.

It is my view that it is part of Putin's plan to destabilise the EU by maximising the migrants fleeing the Mid East.

Until the referendum in Britain, there was never any chance of Britain leaving the EU either.  Can you explain how Greece managed to get in with what many regarded as totally ficticious figures?  Turkey had something to offer in terms of the refugee crisis, and the EU is desperate to keep its membership numbers up, so why not Turkey, untill now of course?   If the EU were considering Turkey's entry, how come it was a Brexiteer lie?  If you are right about Turkey's nil chances of being admitted, why were the EU considering it?  If they were not serious, then it was more like an EU lie.

There are some that are so bitter that a dose of the clap would be blamed on Brexit

We offered them every assistance short of actual help. A diplomatic lie if that makes you feel better

It is a Brexiteer lie because Farage et al knew this to be the case but claimed it was possible if not likely in the near term

EU desparate to keep its membership numbers up? Please explain

Hilarious that one of the main authors of that lie and how 25 million Turks would be flooding into the UK is now assuring Turkey that the UK will assist in Turkey's quest for membership of the EU. I refer to the man who is now the UK Foreign Minister.

Yes that is right but you forgot to add the important part at the end of his statement that he will help Turkey join the EU, as the UK is now leaving.. Payback to the EU. Also the EU have made some promises and compromises to them for various things so it isn't just Boris Johnson.

Its funny how fast politico's change. A couple years back Turkey blows a Russian fighter out of the sky and they hate each other. Would not be surprised to see Turkey now drift into the Russian orbit. Better than aligning themselves with the Chinese I guess.

This is what  pathetic little despot nations like Belgium  have done. Not  content with  having  robbed, pillaged, and looted the Congo followed by the wholescale murder of millions, it  imposes its delusions of grandeur on Europe aided and abetted by clueless one government cultists.  How about getting rid of Belgium from the EU and  bringing back common sense.

As an anti-Islamofascist, and of course anti-Erdogan Turk, I can only say 'Woo-hoooo' to this development.

Well, the EU talks with Turkey weren't going anywhere and even if the talks had reached the end stage, surely, at least a few countries (Cyprus and Austria for example) would have vetoed Turkey's entry; BUT; (this is an important BUT) , this step might be followed by some sanctions against the oppressive government of Turkey, which could be the beginning of the end for Erdogan and AKP.

Remember what mainly caused the downfall of the fascist apartheid regime of South Africa ?! Yes, sanctions. Of course, sanctions by EU against Turkey might or might not come; and sanctions might or might not land a tough blow to AKP and Erdogan. But, at least now, there is some hope.

I am a progressive, anti-fascist Turk with European values, but sadly, people like me are in the minority in Turkey; so I can understand many EU folks' being against Turkey's entry; as long as it is not in a fascist mode.

Did not take long for Erdogan to start mouthing off.

Turkey’s president has threatened to tear up a landmark deal to stem the flow of refugees into Europe a day after the European parliament urged governments to freeze EU accession talks with Ankara.

If Europe goes too far, we will allow refugees to pass from the border gates,” Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said in a speech on Friday at a women’s rights conference. “Do not forget, the west needs Turkey.”

You danced with the Devil Merkel. Now he has got you very tightly by the short and curlies.

Stand by to receive another 4 million and an untold amount of Turks posing as refugees.
