Commerce urges private entities to include rice packs in new year gift baskets

BANGKOK: -- The Commerce Ministry today sought cooperation from private entities to include rice packs in their gift baskets to be sold or given during the upcoming New Year festival.

This was revealed today by the director-general of the Internal Trade Department Ms Nuntawan Sakuntanak as another effort to help the farmers.

As now major retailers are launching sale promotions to push up sales during the upcoming New Year season, and are packing new year gift baskets, she urged that they include rice packs in the gift baskets to help farmers.

This would also ease the current oversupply in the rice market, she said.

But the size of the rice packs was up to the private entities to consider appropriately, she said.

But she stressed that items of goods to be put in the gift basket must be high quality and are not expired.

She said that this year the department has asked that items of goods in the gift basket must be over six months before expiry dates, starting January 1 next year.

Hope the geniuses who came up with this plan realize that for every extra kilo of rice sold now there will be 1 kilo of rice sold less later on.

Only thing you are doing here is moving the purchase date and not increasing the actual demand.

How about just selling the empty baskets in supermarkets. Put the things you want in them and the supermarket can put the ribbon on, etc. This way when you get a gift basket you might get some stuff that you actually want.

A heavy bag of rice doesn't say you care.

Right! It's exactly the kind of initiative that will have no impact at all. In particular in Thailand where people eat rice everyday anyway. :)

Hold on now Bob,the Commerce Ministry spent weeks trying to come up with a scheme that will reduce the rice stocks and this is it,you cannot seriously expect them to think of everything now :cheesy:

If I have a young girl next to me, I seem to consume more "you know activities" than if I am alone. Now if I have a lot of rice, I must surely also consume more rice, right?
