Depends on the group, can be oldest or most senior pays. Sometimes everybody shares the bill.

Yes its etiqette among thais who are of low quality. I have never been in this situation, on the contrary everyone seems to reach for the wallet if you are in a group. How do so many farangs end up socialising with these bottom of the barrel people I will never understand. And i have been treated to a meal by people of little means so its not about financial status either I think.

I think as a long time member it is nice to know ages of other members, just being friendly.

 

Also to know if they have female companions young enough to be their daughters. Sometimes i wish I did:) Sometimes some people think my daughters are, which is one of my pet hates.

If you can remember: Cassius Clay in Rome, Marilyn Monroe, JFK, Winston Churchill, Ian Profumo and Christine Keeler, Ban The Bomb, Selma, the arrival of the Mini ( car and skirt), Dawn Fraser, Lew Hoad , MU Munich, The Pill, John Arlott , Fangio, Wembley 66......then you might be approaching early middle age ( or older).

As to the topic, it is usual in most cultures for the oldest to pay, if playing host. I always make it clear , if it is not already, that I am the host and usually extend an invitation for another/others to join....but never like the bunch of hangers on in Wazza's film

I am late middle-aged. I believe it began at 40 and lasts til 60.

 

Certainly, when I get my pension at 67 I am old, it is even called the "Old Age Pension".

 

I'm not going to fool myself.

 

Sure if I live to 90, I am in middle age. But statistically, I will not.

In East Asian cultures (Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai), you should pay for everything on some special occasions, but special occasions only and not in outrageous amounts. You do not want to get ripped off on a daily basis and all the time. If anyone says that's Thai culture, that's wrong.

 

Decent Thais will feel "krengjai" if they feel they are asking for too much, too often.

No, it is not as far as I am aware. In Australia, 8 times out of 10 my Thai friendship group would exclude me and split the bill between themselves. In terms of family, I have never paid the family bill, actually i don't think i have even paid my part from memory (not from a lack of trying). I have only had one encounter where the suggestion that i pay came up. One of my Mrs drunk work friends suggested that I pay for drinks at a club after the work party. Immediately 6 other work friends ripped into him and made him pay for it for even making the suggestion. Thai are labelled as 'generous' people for a reason...they are generous. Even drinks, sitting with family and friends there will always be that one drunk Thai guy that sends the waiter over with a drink that he has bought for you.
