BANGKOK:-- THE COUNTRY will be much reformed and developed following the promulgation of the military-sponsored constitution which passed a referendum in August, junta-backed figures told a seminar yesterday.

However, a Pheu Thai Party politician and a scholar voiced concerns over the reform plan, saying such moves should be inclusive to ensure that reforms are in line with people’s needs.

“A constitution is written to put rules in place for the country’s administration, to make ‘raw powers, big families’, play the game under the same rules,” Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC) spokesman Udom Rathamarit said during the seminar in Bangkok about the nation’s future under the new charter.

When this lot came to power, they said one of their important reforms was going to be the RTP, and they could do it because no civilian government could ever take it on.

Years later, and what?

Also not many high profile corruption or drugs prosecutions since then either (of 'connected' persons).

Elite tolerance of corruption will ultimately destroy this country.

Another Sunday gag to keep us amused

The headline reads.... "New charter "will pave the way for new reforms""

The very next article headline reads....."Assembly ban may hinder poll preparations"

if laughter really is the cure... then Thailand really does have a shot at becoming a world medical hub.

Admittedly the govt could do a lot more but so far they have done so much more than the any of the others ever did, that cannot be denied, its the crap that comes out every so often that buggers them up

Reform ???

Thailand should arguably be the most "reformed" country in the world, considering all the times the military has intervened in its democratic processes!!!

As history has shown, "reform" in this country is nothing more than an anagram of "former".

I wonder whose relative will get the contract to build the junta's Yellow Brick Road or whatever sub-standard material is used to maximize profits ?

it's a military constitution. Written by and for the military. It will do nothing to stop corruption. And it will do nothing at all to stop corruption among the military. It is just elite control with elections.

Thaksin is a stupid snot, but the military is the problem and the military has been a problem since 1932

And yet without them we'd all be speaking Burmese and Cambodian now.

How so ? Only been an army since 1874. Before that resistance to invasion relied upon the mobilized populace led by a few aristocrats. What finally stopped the Burmese was annexation by the British.

Yes indeed it would be funny if it was not so damn serious.

The origins of the Thai armed forces day.1480905848929.jpg

I'm sorry but origins are not the same as the thing itself. Otherwise we could go back to the first dust up between cave men !

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Thai_Army

The Royal Thai Army is responsible for protecting the kingdom's sovereignty. It is the oldest and largest branch of the Royal Thai Armed Forces. The army was formed in 1874, partly as a response to new security threats following the 1855 Bowring Treaty with Britain, which opened the country for international trade.[3]

A better article :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Thai_Armed_Forces

From this we have :

The Thai military has more than 1,750 flag officers (generals and admirals), a bloated number for a military of its size.By comparison, the US military as of April 2011 had 964 flag officers for a force several times the size of Thailand's.

From this we also have :

Ancient military forces.

Main article: Royal Siamese armed forces (1238-1852)

The Royal Siamese Armed Forces was the military arm of the Siamese monarchy from the 12th to the 19th centuries. It refers to the military forces of the Sukhothai Kingdom, the Ayutthaya Kingdom, the Thonburi Kingdom and the early Rattanakosin Kingdom in chronological order. The army was one of the major armed forces of Southeast Asia.

The army was organized into a small standing army of a few thousand, which defended the capital and the palace, and a much larger conscription-based wartime army. Conscription was based on the "ahmudan" system, which required local chiefs to supply, in times of war, a predetermined quota of men from their jurisdiction on the basis of population. The wartime army also consisted of elephantry, cavalry, artillery, and naval units.

Which gives a ' small standing army '  of a few thousand.

Either way ...........  over the years they were no match for the Burmese except under the reign of King Naresuan.

Reform what?

If leaders do not have aspiration or dreams of a society with equality of justice for all, regardless of race, class or religion for Thai citizens then there will be NO reforms!

The elite will continue to rule (under one guise or another) despite all the platitudes freely given to the masses to placate them.
