PHUKET: -- NEWLY APPOINTED Phuket Governor Chockchai Dejamornthan has mapped out a security, resources and logistics plan for the famous resort-island, aiming to make it a safe destination for international tourists and replace the negative reputation it has in some quarters with a more positive image.

Chockchai said he planned to kick off at least five major projects on the island: developing a taxi-boat service, tightening up security, sourcing more clean water, producing more energy, and flood-prevention measures.

The previous provincial governor had already endorsed a number of action plans to tackle and reduce prolonged problems, including cracking down on illegal business operations at beaches, remanagement of public taxis and transportation, and confronting local mafia gangs.

“I was appointed to oversee the province just a month ago, and I have done my homework to see what I can add [to my predecessor’s plans] in order to improve Phuket into an even better destination,” he said.

Anthony Lark, general manager of the Trisara Phuket and president of the Phuket Hotels Association, said its 51 members – which have a total of 9,000 rooms and around 10,000 staff – had created plans to push Phuket as a truly world-class destination by promoting its strengths of being a great island and offering the warm touch of Thai hospitality, and not only beaches, bars and jet skis.

I don't think there's any doubt that guests staying in the likes of Trisara at 10,000 baht a night will have a wonderful, world-class experience, though how truly Thai that experience is may be debatable, but what about the 80-90% of tourists (depending upon which figures you read with regard to the number of hotel rooms in Phuket)? Beaches, bars and jet skis?

Ahhh 'World Class Destination' yet again. As thee Immigration Nightmare Hub (yep- another hub!) there's no chance. More naive rhetoric and nothing will have been addressed when he moves on, to be followed by the same speech from the next incumbent.

The boat scheme is absolutely ridiculous and shows no knowledge of the weather- did he not notice the storms over the past ten days?

As for more development I'll stand by for Pinot's comment!

Nice more ambitious plans

how about removing and banning all parked tuck tuks and parked Taxis from all the streets in Patong Kata and Karon?implement an hop on hop off transport system. Then Offer small busses going up and down these towns I sure the tourists will appreciate it by staying longer on the island.

Just like all past governors, either pay some lip service to solving the real problems, or just avoid the issues altogether and come up with some random ambitious plans to pivot away from the real issues.

No storms where I live in Khao Khad.....a little rain, but that was it.

If they could fix just one of the many major issues, that would be a milestone worthy of celebration. In the past decade it has so far only been talks and grand plans but it all eventually faded into the depths of corruption.

Im very happy for you but I fear the ferry would have little effect on you anyway!

This is about a ferry trying to batter down the West Coast in high seas and stormy conditions.

I  still see readers and commenters  who  actually think that the Billionaire, and

sister  were  great, honest and fabulous leaders  who  only  had  Thailand's

interests at  heart  when they were  in power!  Ha!  You  are really  smoking

the weed,  if  that  is what  you really  think, hey ,  Reigntax...  I still  think the

Talking about ambitious plans?

How about this?

"A US$4 billion integrated tourism and leisure destination in Vietnam, Hoiana, has been announced by its joint venture partners, Vietnam’s VinaCapital, Gold Yield Enterprises and the Suncity Group of Macau."

It seems to me that this will not be a hot air plan, because its not in Phuket.

Unfortunately another jewel will be lost and replaced with a concrete jungle.

Unfortunately another jewel will be lost and replaced with a concrete jungle.

That's basically a casino surrounded by up market housing developments and a golf course.

Not likely to happen here, at least not until some major changes occur and multiple committees have convened to discuss it at length.
