“She was referred to as an attractive single woman farmer in the Daily News story of the crime.

As though being attractive had anything to do with the rapist's motive. Rapists will use any excuse to violate their victims. Whether it's the type of shoes worn, color of their hair, height, etc.

The press should stop offering excuses as to why someone is raped and just stick to the point that a person was violated without her/his consent. It is a crime with no rationale or justification. Period.

"As though being attractive had anything to do with the rapist's motive"

I wonder what you then make of this piece of research by a couple of academics: http://quillette.com/2016/01/02/to-rape-is-to-want-sex-not-power/

Just to be clear, I am NOT saying that any woman deserves to be raped or that there's any excuse/justification for rape. However, it does appear that most (not all) rapists' motives are sexual in nature, and in this case, the victim's attractiveness may explain why she was singled out (as opposed to a much older woman who would not have been able to fight back so effectively). Of course, it should go without saying that her attractiveness is in no a way mitigating factor in the crime the man attempted to commit.

Maybe men should be educated to behave ethically?

Yeah, they should ... but that would not completely eliminate rape. I'd suggest its in the genes (at the species level, not among Thais in particular). It will always be one of our curses, along with war, murder, racism, etc etc.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate the lady concerned on a job well done, I truly believe that it is high time more women stood up to this kind of behavior, I wonder how often rape occurs in marriages or long term relationships ? Far too many men believe it is their God/Buddha given right to have sex anytime they damn well please, time to turn the tables ladies.

Secondly can someone in TVF management please ensure that words like Bad, Nasty, SCUM, Pimple, Bum boil etc be removed from use on this forum, it upsets people very much and heaven forbid we upset people with sensitive natures. :cheesy:

Of course i know that your post was not serious.

And if you have ever read any of my previous posts on the subject of where a woman has been subject to a sexual assault or rape, you will find that i am more than sympathetic.I am sorry that the sensitive poster was upset, but unfortunately i have the sense of humour that does not suit all people. It was i,when the post came out earlier in the week, that critisized the posters here who refused to believe that it was all her fault.I am viciously against any man that sees a woman as a chattel for use as he sees fit, when he sees fit .But here, it seems the norm for the male ego to expect sexual gratification in anyway he does see fit,and the points go up alarmingly when it is committed on a ferang woman. This (can i use the word?) scum will not be treated in prison here as he would in one of our nick's.He will be a hero, who will regale to his wing buddies, nightly, the story of how he got to have sex with a white woman, and what it was like, because that will be the question on all his verminous cell mates lips.

I hope i have been apologetic to the degree that satisfies your request and i stand admonished in the high realms of the TV forum. If not,i will willingly slash both my wrists in shame immediately.

Agree above - and please don't lose your sense of humour.  I feel sad for that guys family. Like I said he probably was a good father, not a good husband but lost his life through using his wrong head for brains.

Actually it was a typo and should have been lunch box but it read OK for the majority to understand the inference so let it stand as it was. As for the " Bill" it's  pommie slang and again understood by most.

Bit wiser now guys and thanks.   Best reply re my niece's safety has been the loud whistle and the pepper spray. Thanks all.     Is capsicum spray equal?

Tasers that you get along the street markets here arent much chop. Basically the noise/initial shock scares you. If you get past that though you can happily taser yourself for hours without it causing too much discomfort. In terms of an attacker, basically if the initial shock doesnt distract him they will not be of any use. My Mrs has one of the Iphone looking ones, pretty useless thing that doesnt hold its charge. I have one with a torch attached to it. A lot better, but again, unless youre sticking it in the guys eye, not much chop.

The word scumbag is not vulgar to the native speakers of the language it comes from. Complaining that it's offensive to second language speakers, no matter how fluent they are, is inane. If you're learning Thai, you might struggle to learn to use the word for pumpkin without flinching, but if you talk about pumpkins often enough, you'll end up doing it without having a second thought. Seems like you're suffering from an empty hangup.

Quite! In fact the Thai equivalent might be phuu dtam saam which could mean anything from an inferior to a 'base' person where dtam saam = scum. I haven't seen the equivalent of 'scumbag'. Any poster here who has knowledge of the vulgar part of Thai knows that there are far worse.

I somehow knew the word  "scum - - - "  would crop up when I read this story.

This is a word I rarely ever heard used before coming Thailand (I come from Western Europe). It appears to me it is used by peoples from one particular nation on a regular basis.

At home, if a person used this word, most people within earshot would physically cringe with disgust. When I see it written down it appears even worse. ......I can assure readers that I am no "shrinking violet"...and have been pulled up on more than one occasion myself for using the "F" word. But the word I'm referring to, for me, is in a completely different category. It''s on a par with calling a lady by the "C" word.

For me, it says more about the person using it ....than it does about the person it is aimed at.

Yes...the use of that particular word carries a lot of weight...... and that is why it is used in some cases rather than another word that would not "hit home, as hard"....as they say in English...... and usually used by Americans and Canadians more so than other English speaking nations...For Your Information

Sometimes when used callously the reaction is seen below...lol

Image result for them be fightin words

Cheers

Well scumbag isn't in itself a vulgar word, it is only the way it is applied and what is understood in the context in which it is being used - as was clearly demonstrated by a previous poster.

Scumbag, although not in the top 10 hit parade in Aust. is well used and understood in its derogative sense.

Actually if you ask about anyone from North America, there the word "scumbag" is used on a daily basis. Another is "douchebag".

Then why comment on it anyway?

he'll never try to rape another women ever again..."

Bit of an obvious statement!

However, I agree with your last comment!

I'm also from Western Europe, and as catinthehat says it is used on a regular basis in North America, and also in Western Europe, so it is not used by " peoples from one particular nation on a regular basis." There are certain expressions that people use that are very descriptive, when the normal English language does not seem adequate to portray ones's feelings, and to me "scumbag" or "douchebag" is a lot less "disgusting" than calling someone a "C..t", or telling someone to "F..k off"!

(I hope the Mods realise that this is a serious comment)

Another expression (which may be only particular to my "neck of the woods")  in my opinion that can not be adequately replicated in standard English is to call someone a "Gobs...e" very expressive, and to accuse them of "verbal diarrhoea" doesn't quite have the same ring to it!

But to call someone a "scumbag" or "douchebag" is far from the worst insult I can think of!

Yeah, the classes could teach all women how to stab someone to death and claim rape. I can just see an increase in sexpat stabbings when the punter doesn't pay what the girl wants, or maybe just doesn't give her any satisfaction--she stabs him to death; takes as much money as she wants, which would undoubtedly give  her some satisfaction; then claims rape.

U can tell by all the comments that support the actions of this lady that most of forum members are too sick n tired of seeing rape reports of foreigners and thais by drunk local man.

Not justifying what i said b4 or the lady actions. But if the man did attempt to rape, then there is certainly immense satisfaction.

I've been  very afraid for my Uni student niece who is being harassed by a motorbike taxi guy in Bkk.

Like the farmer lady in this article she is also described as    " an attractive single woman " .  Very much so,  and she avoids him..

Thinking about suggesting she carry a knife.

Wait and see the outcome of this case.

How about a taser or Mace (pepper spray)?

Just read a story, 5 minutes ago, about a 18 year old girl in Italy who fought off her assailant, who tried to rape her, and bashed his head in with her shoes needle heel and he died.

She will be charged with murder, how about that?

The mind boggles.

Beautiful. Lovely. Sweet. A story like this warms the heart. No man ever has reason to force himself onto a woman. It is an act of insanity or desperation, or the projection of power. There are some lines in life that should not be crossed. Once you cross those lines, you set into motion a variety of variables. Losing ones life over a rape is completely justifiable, and a really good thing. Just think, he will never have another chance to rape another woman. The air feels fresher today. I doubt if even his own family will mourn his loss.

Italy has become a very weak society, straddled with socialist and super liberal ideas about the law, and justice. Fighting off a rapist should always be considered self defense. If he must be killed, it should never be considered murder. Medals should be awarded to women who defend themselves in this manner. Italy should hang it's head in shame over this.

I'm guessing most countries would/should have the formality of a murder charge up front and one would hope the mitigating circumstances would clear her as self defence, ending even in possible manslaughter and then pardoned?

it could take months? before you could catch up again with that story again and even then it mightn't catch the headlines like the first part has done.

Hope she gets out off scot free.

Thanks Jacko.      Yes,  others have suggested both but best appeal is loud whistle and pepper spray. Must look up capsicum alternative.       Satay sticks, kinfes, etc could turn around nastier to my niece.  Others have suggested Bill and lunch.Never heard of that pommie slang before but others put me straight. :-)     I have yet to learn what is BIB. Been to LOS only 3 times and speak quite a bit of Thai but maybe BIB is some kind of police.?   Mai pen rai.

Seems like women need a bit more protection than ever.

Cat.....I guess you have never dealt with a pissy drunk before? And that can be proven by evidence and witnesses....

Just generally speaking;-  in the many years of the entertainment field, the experience I've had with drunks showed how obnoxious they can be, but that was nothing to the guy last weekend I saw who most likely on ice. He was truly frightening.   Like a spring wound up and obviously a fighter.    Tragic times ahead for so many youth getting hooked.

True, if the woman was raped and did the perp in; good on her. I note what you apparently refer to when you say, " . . . sick n tired of seeing rape reports of foreigners and thais by drunk local man . . . "In Thailand, the man often gets away with it. In Western countries, it is generally the woman who is believed and the man who is convicted.

I know of two cases which happened in the States. One man with whom I went to high school served four years for rape, before the alleged victim came forth and admitted it was consensual. The other was a young employee of mine--he met a girl at a bar and spent the weekend with her. It seems the girl was under 18, but she was drinking in a bar when he met her and the drinking age was 21.  Her mother and an "attorney" arrived at work and presented him the option to pay or go to court--and poor local mothers are ridiculed for encouraging their daughters to join the world's oldest profession.

So, there are scams out there.

Not only that, but the Amanda Knox story showed how a tyrannical prosecutor can fabricate nonsense like "satanic murder cult" (when in fact the FBI crime manual, with heavy influence from famous profiler John Douglas, states there is essentially no such thing as satanic murder cults). Then, when they don't like the "not guilty" verdict, they appeal and keep trying until they get the conviction they want! This is why in the U.S. we have the double-jeopardy law. Once exonerated in a criminal court, you can never be tried for the same crime again. Anyway, while the SECOND trial was going on, her parents said they really believed this other guy who had vanished had been the murderer...and they charged them with criminal defamation!! So there's no freedom of speech in Italy either. In the US, libel and slander are civil offenses, not criminal, and they are hard to prove as well. (Sweden also makes defamation a criminal offense.)
