300,000 internet users petition NLA against the amendments.

BANGKOK: -- THE NATIONAL Legislative Assembly (NLA) will today proceed with the final reading of amendments to the Computer Crime Act BE 2550, despite 300,000 Internet users having voiced opposition to the bill, described by campaigners as a threat to human rights.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said the bill had nothing to do with the so-called single gateway for Internet connections.

“Those who do not understand have been misled resulting in hundreds of thousands pressing ‘Like’ for the online petition against this bill. The government has no policy to use a single gateway for Internet connections. We cannot do that. We will only block pornographic and other inappropriate content [under the amended law].”

“This undesirable content harms people and your children. The new law is aimed at protecting the public good, not a blanket permit to surveil 70 million Thai people. We have seen many inappropriate and illegal websites and we need the legal tools to tackle them.”

“The new law is aimed at protecting the public good…”

Another in the long line of Thai politicians....Placing the needs of the public before his own.

Was there ever any doubt ?

You are absolutely right: there was never any doubt in anyone's mind who has been carefully observing and following the junta's tightening of the noose around liberty and civil rights.

And one of the worst parts of this disgusting business is that one of its chief ministerial advocates and implementers is said to have been, before 'promotion', the head of a Thai university.

For a 'scholar' (who should be defending the right to freedom of expression, without fear or favour) actively to support and promote what is happening in this land is beyond all contempt and execration. I have no words for such a 'person'. A mangy soi dog deserves infinitely more respect ...

In the next TV article Parliament Website Crashes, "Pol Gen Chatchaval Suksomchit, chairman of the scrutiny committee on the Computer Crime Bill, said that the bill did not call for the imposition of single gateway which appears in another bill."

All the Government did was to ask Russian to give them all the information that they have hacked from Thailand.

Saves them a lot of work.

The Thai Computer Crime Act, put in place around 2007, was a very necessary law since there are (sadly) a whole bunch or a*s*h*l*s out there who delight in causing as much damage to other people,s computers as they can. They are very sick individuals, who bravely commit their crimes from the safety of their living rooms, and the more laws there are to bring these sociopaths to justice the happier I feel ! The initial set of laws was basically copied from another country, either U.K. or U.S.A., can,t remember which, but as the whole population gets more and more computer reliant these laws will definitely need to be revised as requirements dictate. They are there mainly for you protection !

Does it block pornographic searches in Thai or just English ?  Is the law protecting the local pornographic business ?  Who deems what is "inappropriate" ?

Like how they use the "single gateway" as a distraction from curtailing free speech.

Funny Prawit is singing a different tune. When it comes to misleading its a case of who excels at misleading the government or the people. 100's of thousands of dumb misinformed people pressing the Like button. Really? Just an incredible statement mind boggling.

The original CCA given to Thailand by the LAST military junta.

The new and improved CCA given to Thailand by the CURRENT military junta.

Of course the law is "for the public good", just look at all the people charged with sedition + CCA violations...

So that is "public good", ... if you are a general.

Yes doing things for the public good is a great smoke screen to hide behind. I have yet to have visited a country over my many years that had done a da*n thing for the public good.

No, not really.

But, in the end it came down to the wire (by junta standards) - 168 to 0,  with 5 abstentions.

Those recalcitrant abstainers must have been who Prayut was referring to when he said,  "...Those who do not understand have been misled..."!

Misled !!! That's rich coming from him !!!

The whole damn country is suffering because of poor leadership.

sometimes it happens, ... maybe by accident.

If a government is actually under the control of the people, then it tends to do things that make sense for a broader group of society. But that is an unfortunately a rare circumstance these days.

And so endeth the reading for the day. Its truly amazing how governments can put a human slant to their statements yet mean exactly the opposite. My liver is starting to get that political foie gras feeling.

On the day when Prayut and Co Ltd locked all the members of parliament inside the negotiating room and pulled a coup , all the people of BKK , then everyone able from the countryside should have invaded the pitch, how many protested to defend Democracy , , the Thai people deserve everything they got,  I have no sympathy at all.
