Hi

i am looking to buy a New MacBook Air, the last one was about two years ago, so it should be due soon ?., anyone heard anything ??

not interested in the MacBook Pro. Prefer the Air as its more sleaker

Posted

I think they might discontinue it soon, hence no upgrades

the newer 12" macbook is too similar, and follows their current thinking in removing all the useful ports

Posted

I don't believe that there will be a new MacBook Air as the newer MacBook pros and MacBooks are just as sleek and weigh the same as the older Air models.

Check out the 2015 MacBook Pro if you need the ports, still a very powerful machine and pretty sleek.

I hope they don't discontinue as I do like the shape, The new Pro looks clumsy, and Yes I know it's the same weight, but I prefer the look of the Air....

How about the MacBook then? Not the pro version. These are really slim but a bit pricey in comparison. Depends what you need it for really.

Mac Book, looks clumsy to me, and I do not need the Disc piece, the Air is what I am after, but if all fails I will get the New MacBook Pro...

but it it's the Air I want....fussy Yes I know....

I am a big Apple fan, basic use but happy with it....

The latest macbook doesnt have a disc piece (cd drive I assume?)

its thinner and lighter than the air and has a retina display

cost more though :)

Haha yeh, I thought he was getting a bit mixed up there. If the new MacBook looks clumsy then there's no hope really. I think they look good but a bit pricey for the specs. I believe the tech reviewers generally say they do perform well, however.

Cheers for that, and YES I will now go and have a look...

appreciated...

No probs

though its biggest downfall IMO is the fact it has one single USB C port, used for charging and EVERYTHING else.

To use usb pen drives/hard drives etc, you will need an adaptor.

Fortunately apple will sell you said adaptors :)

The MacBook is a great machine, if you can justify the price. The MacBook Air is clunky in comparison if you mean the 13 inch. As far as ports go buy a $10 USB hub for the few times you need one. Preferably one with pass through charging.

I would recommend the M5 with 512 storage. Not sure why you would say it is clumsy it makes the air look antiquated. It is only slightly thicker than an iPhone when closed.

The only compelling reason to buy an MBA right now would be price. The screen on the new MacBook is a huge improvement over the MBA.

The Air brand no longer fits as it isn't the slimmest or sleekest one out there. This is one reason they will kill its branding.

I expect the current MBA will be around for a few years and be the go to cheap option for education and students. There will never be a refresh though as it I just doesn't make sense for apple to do so.

^ the M5 processor with 512 storage is B59,900 on Apple/th. The M3 processor with 256 storage is B49,900 on Apple/th.

Looking at the specs on both for my usage, either would easily handle the work I would do. It will still be a couple of years before I'm done with my 2011 mbpro with SSD.

Because of there only being one port I think the 512 model is nice so you have enough storage you really don't need to plug it into a drive often. The little bit of extra CPU is just a bonus. In my opinion the base model should have been 512.

At the prices Apple charges no laptops especially the latest MBP should ship with 256. Apple has been ripping people off on storage for years and is pretty unapologetic about it. There is no way I am paying them every month for cloud storage however so, that's just how it is I guess.

I need to to go back to the Apple Store and look st my Options...

what at I did like about the New MacBook Pro was the New a function above the Keyboard.

Usage for me with Apple is basically Internet and downloading some photos, basic use really , but Apple in my eyes is the best....

thanks again, appreciated..

I almost bought the new Pro 15inch in Malaysia last week (the prices are 5% less and you get a duty free if you holiday visa etc and want to do the papers). I've never had any 13 inch models, so I don't know if they are too small for me.

Then , I read the major reviews which all trash it. Why?

1. No USB port except the new one they give you. Who needs to have adaptors? I have all my stuff on older Thumb drives. I don't use cloud but it has all my stuff, so I may have set it some time.

2. The price, even in KL. Almost 3000 USD. Should be made of gold!

3. battery life no where near 10 hours claimed.

4. The touch bar is very fancy and nice but do we need it? Can anyone explain why? Yes, I know the screen is fabulous and retina. The touch pad is good and big but I like a mouse anyway.

5. ships with 256 is probably enough but 512 is better, but 20,000b more. I like the idea of 16 Ram so I dont lag and clutter, but...

I am a fairly casual user but I love Macs. I don't play games etc. Windows has a new OS and the new machine but I still think I will never go back. Sorry, I don't want the viruses and the drivers.

I like the Mac air but it is a bit weak and tinny. I only need any machine for fun, holidays and airports as I already have Imac 27 inch desktop and Ipad. I like old USBs but I might change if convinced.

Should I get a 2015 or 2016 Pro with USBs? They are heavy. Or should I pay out? I'm more confused by every review I have!

I don't want a Thai keyboard, which was why I looked at malaysia. Must I get a Thai KB in Thailand??

If your not convinced with the MBP have you looked at the Macbook?

http://www.apple.com/macbook/

For your stated use it would be ideal, though at 12" maybe too small?

60k thb for 512Gb, 8gig memory, the 15 inch MBP starts at 90k.

you can choose english keyboard if you order from apple.co.th.

Also, if you have kids in school, or teach, or your missus does (or your gf's second cousins daughters friend is in school.....) you can get around 10% discount

I'm using a 2013 15" MBP, which is still good for now, in fact, in my mind, its a better and more versatile machine than the new MBP.  Like you I'm not ready to throw out my USB A thumbdrives, hdds etc etc and at work I need to interact with windows gear which will be using USB for a long time yet.

Im not convinced with the new one

USB-C is already being adopted and coming to the market. The real problem with the 12 inch MB is it only has one port. It doesn't matter if you have a dongle or not, you can't charge it if you plug something into it. the first USB-C monitors that charge while you plug in are coming out now.

However if you need a 5K monitor that charges through USB-C you already will know what we are talking about anyway. That is pro equipment. If you want to go with a 12" Mac start getting ready to make your set up wireless.

The only thing I have plugged into mine is the power cord. I have one USB-A hub with 4 ports in case I do need to use USB-A. I used it one time for my initial set up and one time for a printer until I set the printer up to be wireless.

Everyday there are more solutions being launched and even 6 months down the road things will be so much different. I am not saying spend a lot of money to be an early adopter but I wouldn't be afraid to ditch usb-a right now. An adapter costs like $10 and you only use it a few times.

My only complaint about the 12 inch MB is it should have two usb-c ports along with the audio jack.

give it 6 months and you are going to find 5 TB USB-C drives, displays that charge your computer through usb-c, and many other things. I have shifted mostly to wireless solutions for my mb. I have wireless earphones, an Apple TV to hook to my TV, and a networking hard drive/router.

The only port I need occasionally I get out a USB hub to do.

I still use Office 2011 in my Mac. I have a pantip CD which is fine and even delivers/allows updates without cutting me. It was 180b.

If I get a new MBP without disk drive (obviously), the shop will load Office Suite for 200 USD in malaysia or about the same in Apple here.

How can I get a pantip suite into the MBP?

Can I just transfer the complete suite from my Imac by dragging?

I am thinking of the new model with TB ports here but the same would be true of anything without CD drive.

Yes, you could use your imac and a 'virtual disc' sharing it to your new laptop.

When i bought mine i got an external apple SuperDrive too, just incase.....ive never even plugged it in

Sorry what is a Virtual Disk?

Does it matter that 2 machines have the same Suite ID (crack)?

How do people get a crack into a machine with no disk? The shop will load it but expensive.

virtual disk is any disk that is available to your network. For now I limit mine to an internal network instead of the cloud because the internet here can suck. Google and Apple are pushing cloud solutions (a cloud solution means it is not stored on your drive but on the net) I am not confident enough to go that route yet. Keep some movies to watch if the power goes out lol

keep several back ups of your information in any case. your info isnt good unless it is in two locations and sometimes the cloud can be one of those.

You can use you imac optical drive as a drive for your macbook over wifi, so both machines must be on the same network. Im not 100% you'd be able to install office this way....

alternatively you could make a disc image (a clone copy of the disc) and put it on a USB stick.

There shouldnt be any issue installing your software twice

Thx, that looks very useful, and the link explains it well.

I have just worked out that the NEW 15" MBP in BKK costs...2521GBP (512 version) and 2140 GBP (256) with the exchange rate today. In malaysia it's 2222GBP and 1888GBP. I should put up or shut up, but 2500 pounds is taking the pee.

As mentioned, I like "normal" ports for my 120 thumb drives and my Ext HDD but I could change easily enough. I know that there are good Windows machines, but I must have Mac.

As I recall, the 12" which comes in pink (too) had some poor reviews. Any other suggestions? The 2015? Did that weigh 3kg?

Has anybody read any really good reviews of the new models 13 and 15 inch with gimmick bar? Please send a link if poss...

Decisions Decisions!

Need to narrow it down - what screen size do you prefer?

Myself I dont have a desktop so I want 15"

If I was in the market for one, I seriously consider ordering (with upgraded SSD and CPU) the last of the outgoing 2015 15" MBP - a 5 star machine

http://www.macworld.co.uk/review/mac-laptops/macbook-pro-15in-2.5-review-3612671/

Having said that, I havent played with the new version yet, and when I did I'd probably buy that instead!!!

Its hard to justify all that cash on what (in your mind) is an out of date machine, but if having USB, HDMI, SD ports is important, its the way to go.

Whatever you buy, get the applecare - My 2013 MBP has had a battery replaced (within 12 months), screen and logic board (after 2 years) replaced - thats a 50k plus repair ?
